ST. PETER, Minn. – The St. Scholastica baseball team fell today in a doubleheader against its conference opponents, the Knights from Carleton. The opening game came down to extra innings, where the Knights narrowly got by CSS. In the second game, the Knights took an early lead, and after the Saints were able to tie the game late, a late run would be the difference and give Carleton victories in both games today.

Game One: CAR: 3, CSS: 2

In the early moments of the first game of the doubleheader, both teams' offense was held in check, with the Saints only being held to three hits in the opening three innings and Peyton Jeffries shutting down the Knights offense with the score remaining at 0-0 through the first three innings.

Kyle Oswald (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) drew a walk to begin the top of the fourth inning, but it would lead to no change in the score which still sat at 0-0.

After seven innings of play with no score, the game entered extra innings with the Saints getting first crack in the top of the eighth.

Oswald drew a one-out walk to put a man on base for the Saints. One batter later, Mason Agir doubled to put two men in scoring position, and Oswald would score on a balk on the next at-bat to give CSS a 1-0 lead.

Mitchell Novak (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) would pick up an RBI on a fielder's choice that scored Agir, giving CSS a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth.

The Knights scored one run on an RBI double to cut its deficit to 2-1, but still had two men in scoring position with a chance to win the game. With two outs, an RBI single would score the two winning runs, as the Knights came away with a 3-2 victory over the Saints in game one.

Game Two: CAR: 5, CSS: 4

Carleton drew first blood in the bottom of the first inning, scoring a run via a balk to give the Knights a 1-0 lead over CSS.

The Knights would extend its lead in the bottom of the third inning, scoring two runs in the inning on two hits, extending its lead to 3-0 after three innings of play.

Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS) led off the top of the third inning with a leadoff walk, followed by an RBI triple by Novak to give CSS its first run of the game. Later in the inning, Adam Braun (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS (Central Lakes CC)) would drive in Novak to make the score 3-2 heading into the bottom of the third.

Carleton would add to its total in the bottom of the fourth inning, bringing home a run on a wild pitch, extending its lead to 4-2.

Schemenauer led off the top of the fifth inning with a single, and would be able to score in the inning on a wild pitch to give CSS its third run of the game. After Braun and Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) got on base, Sam Shopbell (Prior Lake, MN/Prior Lake HS (Fayetteville CC)) would drive in a run on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 4-4.

Jumping to the bottom of the sixth inning, Carleton would be able to add a run on a solo home run, which would ultimately be the winning run, defeating CSS in game two by a score of 5-4.
