3/1/2024 7:51:00 PM

WAVERLY, Iowa – The College of St. Scholastica men's distance medley relay team headed down to Wartburg College for another attempt to improve their time before Nationals. The team of Lars Dewall (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS), Noah Kubicek (Owatona, Minn./Owatonna HS), Tucker Wallin (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing HS), and Calvin Boone (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Highland Park HS) competed in the race.

Leading off for the Saints was Dewall in the 1200m leg. Staying patient in the lead group, Dewall hung steady while the contenders shuffled around. Dewall covered a charge from the lead, and was able to move into contention as he handed the baton to Kubicek for the 400m leg. Dewall split 3:02.12 for 1200m.

Kubicek held off all charges, as he tapped into his speed in the two-lap portion of the relay. He found his final gear around the last curve to move past another team and get the stick around 400m in 49.14 seconds.

Wallin accepted the stick from Kubicek, and could dodge some sticky traffic and get some running room for his 800m leg. Wallin got out quick and fought hard, as the race heated up. With Wallin's leg, the Saints were surely in contention moving into the final 1600 leg. Wallin split 1:53.87 for the half-mile split.

At this point, it was all up to the MIAC mile champ, Boone. Striding behind some of the top milers in the country, Boone connected to the leaders and hung in for the fight. With a 4:07.12 1600m split, Boone crossed the line with the joy of knowing the job was done.

The final time of 9:52.24 is the fastest DMR of all time in the history of the MIAC, passing 2017 St. Olaf's time. The time is also a new school record, and most importantly puts the Saints into a qualifying position for next week's NCAA Division III Championships in Virginia Beach.
