DULUTH, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica Women's Hockey team hosted the Cardinals of Saint Mary's University in the first of a two-game series at home. Tonight would go into overtime where the Saints would fall to the Cardinals 2-1.
What Happened
The first period was well fought, yet tame. The Cardinals would outshoot the Saints 13-7, but in true Saints fashion, the Saints defense would prevent any shots from going in. Cole, who was in between the pipes the whole game, would make some very acrobatic saves not only in this period, but in all three, and into overtime.
At the end of 20 minutes, the game would be tied at 0-0, but that would soon change in the second period. The Saints would show dominance not only in defense this period, but also faceoffs. The Saints would win a staggering 10 out of 15 faceoffs in the first 20 minutes. While they had significantly less control of the puck in the period, those faceoff wins would prove to be important in preventing the Cardinals from any scoring opportunities.
The second period would open up with the Saints in possession of the puck. The Cardinals would be able to get the puck back, and get a few shots off that Cole would fortunately save. And with just over four minutes elapsed in the period, the Saints' Allie Bussey (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) got a breakaway opportunity and took full advantage of this, putting the puck into the back of the net, giving the Saints an early lead in the game. Sara Parent (Otsego, Minn./Rogers HS) and Taylor Leonard (Mound, Minn./Mound Westonka HS) would be credited for the assist.
The Cardinals would try their best this period to get back onto even ground with the Saints, however, Cole would skillfully stop all 19 attempts this period. The second period would conclude with a score of 1-0 in favor of the Saints.
Period three would see the Cardinals take the opening faceoff. The Saints would find a fight in themselves that they have not had since their four-game win streak.
The third period would see three penalties, one of which would seem to lead to a Cardinals power-play goal, but just before that, there was some action on the ice, Cole would face three consecutive shots, all of which she would stop, but the Cardinals would be a bit too aggressive in trying to get the puck in the net, tackling Cole. While Cole was pinned down, the Cardinals would see the back of the net, but after review the call, which originally was a goal, would be overturned, and the goal would be waived off.
Eventually, the Cardinals would get their game-tying goal late in the third. 60 minutes would come to an end with a tied score of 1-1.
Overtime was very lopsided in favor of the Cardinals, they would get the opening faceoff, and have control of the puck for nearly two-and-a-half minutes in the Saints zone. Cole, who was fighting her hardest to keep the Saints alive, would face a total of nine shots on net, she would stop all but one, the one shot would be a breakaway shot that would go bar-down giving the Cardinals the decisive overtime win. While the Saints would try their best in this five-minute sudden death overtime, they would not get a single shot. Ending the game with a final score of 2-1.
Goaltending
Makenzie Cole (Cohasset, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) would play all 63 minutes for the Saints, she would face 60 shots, and register a career-high 60 saves.
Celeste Rimstad would play 62 minutes for the Cardinals, she would face 22 shots and register 21 saves.
