Women's Hockey Tie with Cardinals, Saints Win Shootout

Noteables
- Cole 50 saves
- Pohlkamp Goal, and shootout goal
- Ketola Goal

DULUTH, Minn. – The Saint Scholastica Women's Hockey team hosted the Cardinals of Saint Mary's University in the second of a two-game series at home. Coming off of last night's overtime loss, the Saints were determined to steal a win today, and they did just that.

What Happened
Unlike last night, the Saints would understand that they need to get things done quickly. The Cardinals would combat this intensity with excellent defense, only allowing seven shots on net in the period. However Abby Pohlkamp (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd HS), with great skill, would find the back of the net on one of those shots, giving them a one-goal-lead at the 13:24 mark.

This goal was a power-play goal for the Saints, who largely have been unsuccessful on the power play, but today were able to convert and take advantage of the one skater advantage. The Cardinals would try their best to even the score, attempting 16 shots on net. Cole, who once again was in the crease for the Saints tonight would stop all 16 attempts this period.

The second period would see twice as many goals as the first. However, they were not all in our favor. The first goal would be from the Saints' Jesse Ketola, early in the period, at the 4:28 mark. This would come off a series of good passes, giving Allie Bussey (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and Lisa LaRoche (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) the assists on this goal. The Saints would now have a comfortable two-goal lead, for the majority of the period. But with just 37.9 seconds left in the second, the Cardinals would get a shot off, hitting the back of the net, bringing them to within one goal of the Saints.

Throughout this period, the Saints would get five more shots on net, registering 12 in the period. The Cardinals on the other side, would get 20 shots on net, 19 of which were masterfully stopped by Cole, maintaining their lead.

The third and final period was a true test of skill for both teams. The Saints, entering the period had a one-goal cushion giving them some confidence entering the final 20 minutes of regulation. The Saints would be dominant in many facets of the game, including faceoffs, where they won the first four in a row, and in total, they would win 13 out of 18 faceoffs in the period, greatly helping them maintain control of the game in efforts to keep their lead. Along with that, the Saints would also outshoot the Cardinals 11-10, but it is not the number of shots that matter, as the Saints are well aware, all that matters is if they cross the red line or not, that being said, not one of the Saints 11 shots would see the back of the net. But the Cardinals, who got outshot would see the back of the net with 2:48 remaining in regulation. The Saints would be unable to answer in regulation, bringing this game, much like last game, into overtime.

Overtime was very even for both teams, the Saints would attempt four shots on net, compared to the Cardinals who would get six on net. Both teams showed up on defense, not letting a single shot in in overtime. Bringing this game further to a shootout.

Tonight's shootout would see some excellent talent on both sides of the ice giving it their all to hopefully secure a win for their respective team. The first shot would be attempted by the Cardinals, who would face down Cole in the crease, Cole with excellent skill as always would stop this attempt, keeping the Saints alive. The Saints would be up next, they would send Bussey to take the first shot, Bussey attempted to fake out the goalie, but was unsuccessful.

Round two, the Cardinals would skate quickly towards Cole, Cole would follow the puck with great intent, making the skater choke and lose the puck. The Saints would be up next, sending Pohlkamp, a skillful scorer to try and secure this game. Pohlkamp would skate the puck down, and make the goalie think she would go in slow to cut down an angle, but much to the goalies surprise, Pohlkamp would go for a close-range wrist shot, shooting it up and over the goalie, getting a point in the shootout for the Saints.

The Cardinals had one more attempt to hope for a win. They would skate it down, and attempt to cut the angle on the shot, but Cole was too quick, getting an amazing toe save to seal the game.

Goaltending
Makenzie Cole (Cohasset, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) would play 64:56 for the Saints, she would face 52 shots and register 50 saves.

Celeste Rimstad would play 64:54 seconds for the Cardinals, she would face 32 shots and register 30 saves.
