MENOMONIE, Wis. - The distance duo of
Calvin Boone (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Highland Park HS) and
Lars Dewall (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) traveled to the University of Wisconsin-Stout Quad on Friday afternoon to keep their hot streak of racing alive. The pair entered the mile field to take a crack at yet another school record while hoping to sharpen up for a national bid.
The pace started evenly and accommodating to their goals, as Boone took the lead through the gun lap. Boone led a train of runners, including teammate Dewall, from this moment and hung as the field's rabbit all the way until the bell rang with 200m to go.
NCAA 1500m champion Sam Verkerke, and his national qualifying teammate Mason Shea, both from UW-Eau Claire, were able to find a smidge more gas in the final straightway, as they edged Boone for the win.
Alas, Boone's spectacular time of 4:10.90 shattered his school record from his sophomore season, when he ran 4:14.28 to secure the program's first-ever MIAC individual title back in 2022. His current time will land him at #12 on the NCAA qualifying list going into the weekend.
Dewall finished fifth overall in a massive personal record time of 4:16.61. This makes him the second-fastest miler in St. Scholastica history.
The rest of the squad takes action locally on Saturday, February 10th at UW-Superior. The action kicks off at noon across the bridge.
