WINONA, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team fell in a tough battle tonight against the Cardinals from Saint Mary's on the road. The Saints trailed by just two at halftime, but the Cardinals were able to hold on in the second half, defeating CSS by a score of 71-65.

How it Happened
The Saints were able to jump out to an early lead following layups from Noah Winesett (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and Andre Crockett Jr. (Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS (Rochester Community College)), and two three-pointers from Jacquez Overstreet (Appleton, Wis./Oshkosh West (Marian University)), taking a 10-5 lead.

After the Cardinals took a brief lead, jumpers from Winesett and Aaron Keykal (Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) helped give CSS a one-point lead.

Koy Nelson (Port Wing, Wis./South Shore HS) and Jeff Moore (Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS) got their nights started moments later, when Nelson scored on a jumper, and Moore hitting a three-pointer.

CSS' next two field goals would come courtesy of Nelson and Overstreet both hitting jumpers, as the score sat at 28-25 in favor of Saint Mary's.

Late in the first half, Kevin Thomas (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) would hit a clutch three-pointer to tie the game at 30-30, but a late Cardinals basket would give Saint Mary's a two-point lead heading into halftime.

Winesett began the second half for the Saints with a three-pointer, and a layup from Keykal would score on a layup to trim the deficit to just four points.

Saint Mary's would break its lead open to 10 points before Nelson hit a three-pointer to give CSS momentum and make the score 49-42.

St. Scholastica got itself right back in the game, when Tanner Thomson (Woodbury, Minn./Stillwater HS) hit a pair of jumpers, followed by a three-pointer from Moore, trimming the deficit to just one point.

Another three-pointer from Nelson helped keep the Saint within striking distance, trailing 61-58.

Despite the Saints getting late baskets from Winesett and Crockett Jr, the Cardinals were able to hold on to a 71-65 victory over the Saints tonight.
