BLAINE, Minn. – The College of St. Scholastica men's hockey team season came to an end tonight after a heartbreaking double overtime loss to Bethel in the MIAC semifinals.
How It Happened
The Saints came out evenly against Bethel shots being about 50/50 from both sides. Bethel found the back of the net about halfway through the period and that would be the last goal the Royals scored for almost 4 periods.
In the second period the Saints seemed to have the edge as this period was a bit faster than the first. No goals were scored in the period as Bethel held the lead of 1-0 heading into the final period of regulation. Shots in this period were 15-13 Saints.
In the third period, St. Scholastica came out hungry trying to find that game-tying goal. Shots were even in this period 8-8 as both teams had opportunities. But the Saints scored with just over 6 minutes remaining off the stick of Kieran Chung (Nottingham, England), assisted by Jacob Seitz (Mountain Iron, Minn./Virginia HS) and Filimon Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya). Both teams fought to find the game winner but it couldn't be decided in regulation.
The first overtime period found the Saints dominating the puck for the majority of the time, especially over the first 10 minutes. The Saints top lines looked strong the entire period and shut down the Royals top line.
Both teams looked to lose a little steam towards the end of the period where Bethel had some big chances and the Saints goaltender Bostedt was able to shut them down. These two teams were headed into double overtime.
Bethel scored 11 seconds into the 5th period off of what the Saints thought to be a kick in goal but there wasn't enough evidence to overturn the call ending the game and sending the Royals to the MIAC Championship, where they will host St. Olaf College.
Goaltending
Senior Jack Bostedt (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig HS) (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig HS) played outstanding tonight for the Saints and kept his team in the game. Bostedt stopped 38 of 40 shots and had some great saves on a few tough chances.
Bethel's goalie Austin Ryman stopped 41 of 42 shots tonight and was ultimately the winning factor tonight.

The Saints finish their season with a record of 15-10-1 (8-7-1).
