ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team traveled to take on the Pipers from Hamline this evening in St. Paul. CSS trailed by just four points at halftime, but the Pipers were able to expand its lead in the second half, coming away with a 75-63 victory over the Saints this evening.
How it Happened
Hamline was able to grab an 11-0 lead before the Saints got its first points. Hope Carlson (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) and Kloey Lind (Pine City, Minn./Pine City HS) were the ones who were able to put an end to the run, as the duo both got their first points off layups.
A layup by Gabby Voigt (St. Michael. Minn./St. Michael- Albertville HS) and a three-pointer from Katie Vaske (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS (Hamline University)) helped bring CSS back into the game, and after a Carlson layup, the Saints trailed by just four points to end the opening quarter.
Carlson and Vaske got the first baskets of the second quarter for the Saints, with Carlson scoring on a layup and Vaske hitting her second three-pointer, making the score 18-16 in favor of Hamline.
After clawing back-and-forth, Carlson was able to convert a three-pointer, followed by a successful trip to the free throw line by Jackie Johnson (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS), tied the game at 23-23.
Closing out the first half for the Saints, Voigt scored on a jumper, with an assist credited to Johnson, followed up with a three-pointer by Carlson, cutting into the Pipers deficit as the Saints trailed 32-28.
Johnson scored on a layup to get the Saints offense started in the second half, as Carlson would knock down another three-pointer moments later to make the score 40-35 with Hamline still holding a small lead.
After a quick 9-0 run by the Pipers that put them up 14 on CSS, Vaske struck again from three-point range, hitting two three-pointers to bring the deficit to under double-digits.
Voigt would score the last field goal for the Saints in the third quarter on a layup, as Hamline took a 57-46 lead into the final quarter.
Lind was able to score on a pair of layups for the Saints in the fourth quarter, which would be added with another Vaske three-pointer, as the Saints still trailed by eight points.
Late in the quarter, Lind would score once again on a layup, but the Pipers were able to hold on and take tonight's game by a score of 75-63.

The Saints (10-13, 7-12) will be back in action on Saturday, where they will travel to Moorhead to take on the Cobbers from Concordia for the season finale. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
