Box Score Duluth, MN. - The St. Scholastica Saints Women's Hockey team took on the Pipers from Hamline at the Mars Lakeview Arena. Despite a comeback from the Saints to level the score in the second period, they fell short in a 6-2 loss.
How it Happened
1st Period
St. Scholastica found themselves under heavy pressure from Hamline's offense immediately after the faceoff. An early goal by Erika Broten, assisted by Averie Martin at 5:37, put the Saints at a quick disadvantage.
The Pipers efficiently handled the Saints' limited attacks and maintained control of the game. By the halfway mark of the first period, Hamline had fired ten shots on the net compared to just one from the Saints.
In the closing minutes of the period, Hamline's Emma Nelson capitalized on a defensive lapse, extending the lead to 2-0 with assists from Lily Svajgl and Morgan Wohlers.
The period ended with a commanding performance from the Pipers, outshooting the Saints 23-3.
2nd Period
The Saints returned from the break with renewed energy, scoring just two minutes into the second period to narrow the gap to 2-1.
Jenna Horvat (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) netted the goal, marking her first collegiate score.
After an extended stretch of back-and-forth action, freshman
Morgan Mitchell (Farmington, MN/Farmington HS) secured her first collegiate goal as well, leveling the game at 2-2.
The Pipers pushed hard for a leading goal, unleashing a series of quick shots in the final minute, but they couldn't break through.
The Saints ended the period on the front foot, with goalie
Makenzie Cole (Cohasset, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) making an impressive 15 saves in the second period.
3rd Period
The Pipers responded fiercely, scoring just 58 seconds into the final period of this intense matchup, narrowing the gap to 3-2.
Amid shaky possession from the Saints, Hamline pressed relentlessly for another goal. With eight minutes remaining, the Pipers extended their lead to 4-2, solidifying their advantage.
The Saints struggled to regain momentum and conceded again with less than two minutes left on the clock. Shortly after, Hamline struck once more, sealing the game with a decisive 6-2 victory.
Despite the loss, Cole made an impressive 57 saves throughout the game.

The Saints (1-9-0, 0-6-0) will resume the action at the Mars Lakeview Arena next Friday, December 13 to take on the University of Wisconsin-Eau-Claire. The puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m. here in Duluth.
