Women’s Basketball Cruises to Victory in Conference Opener

Northfield, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team opened their conference season this evening on the road against the Knights from Carleton College. The Saints took an early lead into the halftime break, and continued their dominance into the second half, taking tonight's contest by a score of 70-39. 

How it Happened

First Quarter

The Saints offense got out to a quick start, with Ava Haus (St. Michael/St. Michael-Albertville High School) and Jackie Johnson (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) both nailing three-pointers, followed by a Kloey Lind (Pine City, Minn./Pine City HS) layup to take an early 8-2 lead over the Knights. 

Ava Riegel (Rogers, MN/Totino Grace High School) got her night off on the right foot, scoring her first field goal she saw and Lind was able to record another field goal, as the Saints led by double-digits for the first time tonight. 

After the Knights would be able to get themselves back into the contest, Lind would score the final field goals of the quarter for the Saints, giving themselves an 19-11 lead after one quarter of play. 

Second Quarter

Haus and Johnson would start off the quarter once again with three-pointers, as well as Hope Carlson (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) getting her first points of the night on a layup, extending the Saints lead to 27-13. 

The Saints kept their foot on the gas, as Lexi Imdieke (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) the next two field goals for CSS scoring both on three-pointers, extending the CSS lead to 35-13. 

Carleton was able to string together a few points to end the quarter, but the Saints took a 36-16 lead heading into the halftime break. 

Third Quarter

Lind would score the first points for CSS to begin the second half on a layup and Haus was able to convert another three-pointer to get the Saints out to a quick run to begin the half. 

Haus would score the next three field goals for the Saints, two of which came from beyond-the-arc, expanding the Saints' lead to 39-19. 

Later in the quarter, Johnson would notch another three-pointer of her own, followed by a jumper by Madison Kenyon (Woodstock, IL/Marian Central Catholic HS) to cap off the quarter for the Saints, leading 55-19. 

Fourth Quarter

Lind would get two layups to fall to open the final quarter for CSS and moments later Daysia Simmons (Albertville, MN/St. Michael HS) put her name in the scorebook with a jumper to make the score 61-21. 

Kate Toewe (Hibbing, MN/Hibbing HS) would score her first points of the night on a layup at the 5:53 mark in the quarter, as Kenyon would add to her total with a jumper moments later to expand the Saints' lead. 

The Saints' final field goals of the night both came on layups, as it was Maddie Lowe (International Falls, MN/Falls HS) and Kenyon scoring for CSS, rounding out tonight's team effort to come away with a 70-39 victory. 

Top Performers

  • Ava Haus (St. Michael/St. Michael-Albertville High School) led the way for CSS in the scoring department, logging 19 points while also adding five three-pointers and recording three assists.
  • Kloey Lind (Pine City, Minn./Pine City HS) recorded a double-double in tonight's contest, recording 17 points to go along with 12 rebounds in the victory. 
  • Jackie Johnson (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) added nine points tonight, recording all of her points from beyond-the-arc.

Up Next

The Saints (3-4, 1-0) will be back in action on Saturday, December 7, where they will host Saint Mary's University at the Reif Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
