St. Paul, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team hit the road to take on the Pipers from Hamline University this evening in St. Paul. The Pipers led by just one point at the halftime break, but the Pipers were able to use a hot third quarter to propel themselves past the Saints in tonight's contest, prevailing by a score of 57-38.
How it Happened
First Quarter
The Saints got on the board first this evening on a Jackie Johnson (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) three-pointer to get the Saints offense going.
After the Pipers went on a quick 5-0 run, Ava Haus (St. Michael/St. Michael-Albertville High School) got her first points of the night on a three-pointer to give the Saints their lead back with a 6-5 lead.
Johnson came away with the final field goal for CSS in the opening quarter, scoring on a layup, as the game sat at 8-8 after one-quarter of play.
Second Quarter
Haus nailed her second three-pointer of the half to kickstart the Saints offense in the second quarter, making the score 11-8 in favor of CSS.
Hope Carlson (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) added a pair of free throws later in the quarter to tie the game at 15-15 with 5:33 to play in the first half.
Kloey Lind (Pine City, Minn./Pine City HS) was able to draw a foul and convert an and-one in the final stages of the quarter, followed by another three-pointer from Haus to close out the half with the Saints trailing 22-21.
Third Quarter
Haus opened the third quarter for CSS with a three-pointer, giving CSS its first lead of the second half, 24-22.
Hamline was able to go on a 7-0 run before a three-pointer from Gabby Voigt (St. Michael. Minn./St. Michael- Albertville HS) put an end to the Pipers' run, but Hamline reclaimed the lead at 29-27.
Jada Bierschbach (Richmond, Minn./Rocori HS) was able to get herself to the free throw line and convert her free throws to end the scoring for CSS in the third quarter, but the Pipers were able to expand their lead to 42-31 entering the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter
Ava Riegel (Rogers, MN/Totino Grace High School) scored for the first time tonight to start the scoring for the Saints in the quarter, cutting the deficit to under double-digits.
The Pipers went on a 9-0 run over the next four minutes to extend their lead to 51-33 before Haus knocked down her fifth three-pointer of the game.
Voigt scored the final field goal for the Saints in the late stages of the quarter, as the Pipers came away with the victory by a score of 57-38 in tonight's contest.
