Duluth, MN. – The St. Scholastica Women's hockey team took on the Yellowjackets from UW-Superior at Mars Lakeview Arena this evening. Both teams played strong defense and had top-notch goaltending performances, forcing the game to overtime at 0-0. The Saints came away with the victory after scoring a goal just over a minute into overtime, earning their first win of the season.
How it Happened
1st Period
The Saints' offense came out to a fast start, recording a trio of shots from
Paige Blattner (Avon, Minn./River Lakes HS),
Sara Parent (Otsego, Minn./Rogers HS), and
Kendra Royer (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall HS), but the Yellowjackets were able to turn down the Saints' attempts in the early moments of the period.
St. Scholastica had an early chance to show off their power play, and despite attempts by the Saints to break the scoreless tie, UWS provided a fundamental penalty kill to deny the Saints.
Bailey Coole (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and
Victoria Nelson (Mahtomedi, MN/Mahtomedi HS) tried to get the Saints on the board in the last seconds of the first period, but UWS saved both shots, as the score remained at 0-0 after the first intermission.
2nd Period
The Yellowjackets began the period peppering the Saints offensively, but Cole was there to stop all the shots she faced to begin the period.
Lyndi Schubert (Mantorville, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville HS) and
Suzi Vidmar (Boise, Idaho./Timberline HS) gave the Saints their first looks in the second period with shots on goal, but to no avail as the game still sat at 0-0.
UWS recorded six shot attempts in just under three minutes near the midway part of the period, but Cole stopped all shots she faced.
Cole recorded four more saves in the final minutes of the period to close out the Saints defensive side of the puck.
In the closing moments of the period, CSS received late shots from Schubert and Nelson, but after two periods of play, the score remained deadlocked at 0-0.
3rd Period
The Saints opened the period on the aggressor, as
Gabby Gamst (Moose Lake, Minn./Moose Lake HS),
Hannah Martin (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS), and
Morgan Mitchell (Farmington, MN/Farmington HS) all recorded their first shots on goal, but the score remained 0-0.
After the Saints went on the powerplay just seven minutes into the period,
Taylor Leonard (Mound, Minn./Mound Westonka HS) and
Sophie Parendo (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) both tried to score the decisive goal, but UWS' defense remained resilient, killing off the penalties with no goals allowed.
Cole recorded four key saves for the Saints down the stretch in the period to keep the score right where it was and allow the Saints to score the game-winning goal with less than six minutes to play.
The Saints were handed a minor penalty with a little over two minutes to play in the contest, and despite the Yellowjackets getting looks at the net, the Saints' defense held their own in the last minutes of the period to send the game to overtime tied at 0-0.
Overtime Period
St. Scholastica responded quickly in the overtime period, scoring on their first shot on goal.
Grace Chapman (Blaine, MN/Blaine HS) scored the game-winning goal, with assists going to Leonard and Royer. This gave CSS their first win of the season.

- Makenzie Cole (Cohasset, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) made 34 saves in the net tonight, recording a shutout in the 1-0 victory.
- Grace Chapman (Blaine, MN/Blaine HS) scored the game-winning goal for the Saints tonight, while also recording three shot attempts.
- Isabella Brama (Minneapolis, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) led the Saints in blocked shots tonight, logging four blocked shots in the win.

The Saints (1-7-0, 0-4-0) will be back in action next Friday, December 6, when they will travel to St. Paul to take on the Pipers from Hamline University. The puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m.
