Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Will Nelsen

Women's Hockey Trumped by the Bennies

Duluth, MN. – The Saint Scholastica Women's hockey team headed west to Saint Cloud to play in a MIAC Conference game against the Bennies of the College of Saint Benedict. This would be their second game against the Bennies in a two-game series.

Tonight's outing ended the same way as the first, with the Bennies taking the win. While it was a well-fought effort, the Saints were not able to keep up with the Bennies on both offense and defense, eventually allowing the Bennies to score five goals while not giving up one.

How it Happened
First Period

The Saints opened the game with a win in the neutral zone, followed by a shot on net from Sophie Parendo (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS). The first play by the Saints was a short stint, followed by a fairly lengthy Saint Ben offensive possession, during which the Bennies got six shots off, four of which were on target.

The Saints found some early momentum after their defense was able to hold, and managed to go on a run of their own, getting 13 shots to fly, nine of which were on target and saved by the goalie.

Both teams went back and forth for a brief time until the Saints found themselves in the penalty box. It was on this penalty that the Bennies managed to score their first goal of the game.

The first period would quickly come to a close after their goal.

Second Period
The second period opened up similarly to the first, the Bennies dominated in the Saints' defensive zone, riddling Cole with a flurry of shots.

The Bennies found themselves in the penalty box next, this time only two minutes into the second period. While the Saints were on the power play, the Bennies were still able to hold the Saints to only three shots, all of which were stopped, successfully killing the penalty.

Both teams traded blows for a brief time, that was until the Bennies once again had a long offensive push that was ultimately stomped out by the Saints' defense.

Once again both teams traded shots, this time in groups of three, but on the Bennies' second possession after the Saints, they once again rang in a goal. Their lead was now extended to two.

Just under two minutes later, the Bennies found a hole in the Saints' defense and managed the puck through for another goal, their third.

The rest of the period would be played with the Saints on their heels, never really gaining possession of the puck, but successfully halting any other scoring opportunities.

Period two came to a close with a final score of 0-3.

Third Period
The Saints opened the third period with a power play, once again, the Bennies' defense only relented three shots before the penalty was killed off.

Once again, the Bennies had the puck. As a result of the Saints goaltending by Cole, they managed to stop six more shots. But on the seventh, she would be beaten. The Bennies recorded their fourth goal of the game after another offensive onslaught.

Just over halfway through the third period the Saints had another power play. This time, they were able to get five shots on the net, however, they were unsuccessful in finding the back of the net.

After only two shots against full strength, the Saints had yet another power play opportunity. In a similar fashion to the other power play opportunities the Saints have had tonight, they managed to get three shots on the net.

The Bennies had the puck once more, and after one shot that was saved, the Bennies buried their fifth and final goal of the game.

The game came to a close with both sides exchanging a couple of shots but the final buzzer sounded and the Bennies won, 0-5.

Goaltending
  • Makenzie Cole (Cohasset, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) was in between the pipes for the Saints, she faced 35 shots and recorded 30 saves. Her save percentage for the night was .875.
  • Kate Moffat was in net for the Bennies. She faced 32 shots and made 32 saves.
