Duluth, MN. – The St. Scholastica Women's hockey team opened the series between the Auggies from Augsburg University tonight at Mars Lakeview Arena. After a back-and-forth first period that saw no goals, the Auggies controlled the tempo for most of the contest, taking tonight's matchup by a score of 3-0.
How it Happened
1st Period
The Auggies offense came out firing in the early minutes of the game, but
Makenzie Cole (Cohasset, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) was able to stop all five shots on goal to begin her evening in the net.
Grace Chapman (Blaine, MN/Blaine HS) got the first shot on goal for the Saints at the 7:32 mark in the period but was turned away with the game still deadlocked at 0-0.
Both teams traded possession throughout the period. The Auggies outshot the Saints 10-4, with Cole stopping all 10 shots. After one period of play, the game remained scoreless.
2nd Period
After Cole denied the Auggies in the period's opening minutes, Augsburg broke the scoreless tie at 4:35 to take a 1-0 lead over CSS.
A little over a minute later, at the 5:13 mark, the Auggies found the back of the net once again, extending their lead to 2-0 over the Saints.
Cole rebounded and stopped the next eight shots she faced, with the score remaining at 2-0.
The Saints looked to get on the board with shots from
Bailey Coole (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and
Gabby Gamst (Moose Lake, Minn./Moose Lake HS), but they were each turned away.
St. Scholastica had opportunities to close out the period, with
Hannah Martin (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS),
Hanley Block (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria HS),
Lyndi Schubert (Mantorville, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville HS), and
Victoria Nelson (Mahtomedi, MN/Mahtomedi HS) all getting looks at the net. However, the Auggies were able to deny the Saints, taking a 2-0 lead into the second intermission.
3rd Period
Cole recorded three saves in the first six minutes of the period to keep the score at 2-0.
Martin and Nelson recorded multiple shots on goal in the middle stages of the period, but to no avail, as the Auggies still held the Saints scoreless with less than 10 minutes to play.
As the Auggies went to a dump'n-chase method of hockey to protect their lead, the Saints got aggressive with their attack, with
Jenna Horvat (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and
Paige Blattner (Avon, Minn./River Lakes HS) getting looks at the net but the Auggies continued to deny the Saints their opportunity to get on the board.
Augsburg scored once again at the 15:52 mark in the period, but the Saints were unable to find the back of the net in tonight's contest, falling by a score of 3-0.

The Saints (0-6-0, 0-3-0) will be back in action tomorrow, November 23, when they will travel to Minneapolis to take on the Auggies once again. The puck drop is scheduled for 4 p.m.
