Duluth, MN. – The St. Scholastica Women's hockey team hosted their second home contest of the season, taking on the Bennies from Saint Benedict University. The Bennies were able to control most of the game, but a late Saints goal in the third period forced the game to go to overtime. In the overtime period, the Bennies would capitalize with just 26 seconds left to take tonight's contest by a score of 2-1.
How it Happened
1st Period
The Saints had early momentum in the opening minutes of the period, as the Saints got a number of shots on goal on an early powerplay, but the Bennies were able to kill it off as the game remained at 0-0.
Makenzie Cole (Cohasset, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) stopped her first three shots she faced, but the Bennies snuck one past her to take a 1-0 at the 8:05 mark in the period.
The Bennies fired five shots on goal in four minutes after taking the lead, with all of those shots being denied by Cole and the game remaining at 1-0.
Hanley Block (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria HS) and
Grace Chapman (Blaine, MN/Blaine HS) both tried to get the Saints on the board with shots on goal, but the Saints were denied, with the Bennies taking a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
2nd Period
After penalties at the end of the first period, both teams found themselves playing four-on-four hockey. Cole recorded three saves before the Saints were handed a penalty and would play a man down.
Near the end of the Bennies powerplay, Cole made an incredible diving save that nearly found the back of the net, but Saint Benedict was shut down with the score still sitting at 1-0.
After the Saints killed off another penalty in the early stages of the period, the Bennies were issued a minor penalty and it was the Saints' turn to go to work and try to even the score.
Shots from Block and
Taylor Leonard (Mound, Minn./Mound Westonka HS) were denied on the Saints' first shots on goal on the powerplay, as the Bennies were able to perform a strong defensive showing to kill off the Saints' powerplay.
A few minutes past the halfway mark in the period, the Saints were denied another opportunity to even the score, with shots
Sophie Parendo (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) and
Paige Blattner (Avon, Minn./River Lakes HS) were off the mark.
St. Scholastica killed off another powerplay with just over two minutes to play in the period, with the Bennies still clinging to a 1-0 lead after two periods of play.
3rd Period
The Saints notched two shots on goal before they went on the powerplay just five minutes into the period. In the opening seconds of the powerplay
Kendra Royer (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall HS) and
Victoria Nelson (Mahtomedi, MN/Mahtomedi HS) both recorded shots on goal but the Saints were still held scoreless.
After both teams were at even strength,
Grace Chapman (Blaine, MN/Blaine HS) tried to get the Saints on the board with a pair of shots, but to no avail with the Bennies holding on to a 1-0 lead.
Midway through the period, the Saints were handed two minor penalties and showcased a strong penalty kill for the next few minutes to get back to even strength.
With less than four minutes left in the period, the Saints went on the powerplay once again and after a brief timeout 45 seconds into the powerplay, the Saints were able to score their first goal of the game as Block notched the goal with
Hannah Martin (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and
Lyndi Schubert (Mantorville, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville HS) recording assists.
CSS had an opportunity to score the difference maker near the final moments of the period, but the Bennies shut down the Saints as the game went into overtime tied at 1-1.
Overtime
The Bennies opened the overtime period on the attack, recording a trio of shots on goal, but Cole was able to stop all shots from the Bennies.
After the Saints had an opportunity to score, the Bennies came down on the other side of the ice and scored the game-winning goal on a one-timer to come away victorious over St. Scholastica this afternoon.

The Saints (0-4-0, 0-1-0) will be back in action tomorrow, November 16, where they will travel to St. Joseph, where they will take on the Bennies once again to complete the series. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
