Box Score Duluth, MN. – The St. Scholastica Men's Soccer team traveled to Saint Paull, Minn. to compete in a MIAC Conference soccer game against the Pipers of Hamline University.
While it was a one-sided game for most of the match, the Saints fell 1-5, but the Saints still had their best foot forward, putting the most effort they could against a tough MIAC opponent in the Pipers.
How it Happened
First Half
The first half began slowly, with both teams rattling off several shots, with each goalie recording a save.
Nearing the 30-minute mark the Saints would have control of the ball in the Hamline zone for a sizable amount of time, letting three shots go, all of which were on target.
With a slow first half winding down, it was inevitable that one team would take the edge before halftime. With just a minute and a half remaining in the first, the Pipers managed to beat the Saints' defense to score the first goal of the game.
The first half would end with the Pipers up 0-1. There were 16 shots in the half, ten of which came from the Pipers, the other six from the Saints. While the Pipers did outshoot the Saints, Scholastica did have more shots on goal, recording five, the Pipers were held to four.
Second Half
The final forty-five opened slower than the first. No shots were attempted in the first four minutes of play but on the fifth, the Pipers struck again, extending their lead to two goals.
Following the Pipers' goal, the Saints answered back with a shot of their own, to no avail. It only took the Pipers four minutes to find the back of the net once again, this time at the 53-minute mark, extending their lead once more to 0-3.
Understanding the game was getting out of reach the Saints were desperate for some relief. Knowing this, both teams went back and forth on shots, but on the Pipers' fourth attempt, they managed to further extend their lead, now by four goals in the 61st minute.
The Saints would not get shut out, after peppering the Hamline net with three shots, Ted Barker (Huntingdon, England) found the back of the net from a perfectly placed pass from Gabriel Marchesoni (Surrey, BC, CA).
After the Saints' goal, they would suffer two yellow cards, giving the Pipers ample opportunity to score again. After one shot from the Pipers, Hamline would again widen the gap with another goal, their fifth of the night.
The game would end with the Pipers taking the 1-5 victory over the Saints.
