DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team fell this afternoon to one of its conference rivals, the Bennies from Saint Benedict. The Saints led by six points at halftime, but a big third quarter for the Bennies put them in a spot to come away with a hard-fought 66-61 victory over CSS this afternoon.

How it Happened
The Saints were able to grab an early lead, thanks in part to layups from Jackie Johnson (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) and Hannah Compton (Anoka, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS), in the early moments of the first quarter.

The Saints were able to reclaim the lead and advance it up to seven, with layups coming from Hope Carlson (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS) and Gabby Voigt (St. Michael. Minn./St. Michael- Albertville HS), and a key jumper from Katie Vaske (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS (Hamline University)) helped give CSS a 12-5 lead.

Jumping into the second quarter, Kloey Lind (Pine City, Minn./Pine City HS) got her afternoon started with a layup, coming off an assist from Johnson, and Compton hitting her first shot from beyond-the-arc.

Carlson would score the next five points for CSS on a three-pointer and a layup, pushing its lead to 24-15 over the Bennies.

Moments later, Carlson would once again hit one from three-point range and also provided the last field goal for CSS in the first half with a layup, as the Saints took a three-point lead into halftime.

The Bennies jumped out to a fast start to open the third quarter, going on a 17-2 run before Carlson scored the Saints' first field goal of the second half with a three-pointer, as the Bennies now led 42-36.

After being fouled in the late moments of the third quarter on a three-point attempt, Carlson would drill all three shots from the free throw line, as the Saints trailed Saint Benedict 49-39 heading into the final quarter.

Jumpers from Compton and Carlson kickstarted the Saints offense to open up the fourth quarter, and moments later, Compton would hit one from three-point range, as the Bennies lead was cut down to six points.

Late layups from Compton, Lind, and Carlson kept CSS within striking distance, but the Bennies were able to sneak away with a 66-61 victory over St. Scholastica this afternoon.
