Women’s Basketball Falls to Bethel in Home Matchup

DULUTH, Minn. – The College of St. Scholastica women's basketball team fell tonight in a conference matchup against the Bethel Royals. Bethel took a 15-point lead into the half, and was able to hold on to its lead throughout the second half, defeating CSS by a score of 78-61. 

How it Happened
Jada Bierschbach (Richmond, Minn./Rocori HS) scored the first field goal for the Saints this evening, as the Royals took a one-point lead early on. 

Later in the quarter, after trips to the free throw line, Hannah Compton (Anoka, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS) scored on a layup, as Bethel had a 17-9 lead after the opening quarter. 

Jackie Johnson (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) scored on back-to-back possessions for CSS to snag her first points of the night in the opening moments of the second quarter. 

Compton and Katie Vaske (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS (Hamline University)) would score the next two field goals for the Saints, both coming on layups, but Bethel still held a 14-point lead. 

Compton and Johnson would score consecutively for St. Scholastica on layups, as the Saints would be helped at the free throw line by Johnson and Kloey Lind (Pine City, Minn./Pine City HS) before the end of the half, trailing 39-24 at halftime. 

Lind and Vaske scored the first points for the Saints to open the second half, cutting the deficit to 11 points. 

Moments later, Lexi Imdieke (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) converted from beyond-the-arc and Bierschbach scored on a layup, making the score 48-33. 

Compton scored once again for the Saints, this time from three-point range, which would be followed with an and-one by Gabby Voigt (St. Michael. Minn./St. Michael- Albertville HS), as the score sat at 58-39. 

Imdieke and Johnson both opened the fourth quarter with three-pointers, followed up by layups from Lind and Compton, but Bethel still held a 68-51. 

Bierschbach would hit a three-pointer of her own moments later, cutting the score to 70-54. 

In the closing minutes of the game, CSS got a fastbreak layup from Nia Hacker (Farmington, Minn/Eastview HS), and a trio of free throws hit by Madeline Perry (Ely, Minn./Ely Memorial HS), but the Royals took tonight's game by a score of 78-61.

The Saints (5-5, 2-4) will be back in action on Saturday, where they will host Saint Benedict's at the Reif Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
