-Saints played 75 minutes shorthanded

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team made its 2023 MIAC debut this afternoon, taking on the Cobbers from Concordia-Moorhead. The Saints played 74 minutes shorthanded after getting handed a red card, as the Cobbers were able to score two goals in the second half. CSS was resilient, scoring a goal late, but the Cobbers were able to hold on for a 2-1 victory over the Saints.

Fresh off his first season win last Sunday, Ben Hallberg (Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) was able to defend some early shots to keep the score tied. 

After a second yellow card was handed to the Saints, they were forced to play the last 75 minutes shorthanded.

The teams battled in the first half, but no goals were to come, as the game remained 0-0 at halftime. 

12 minutes into the second half, in the 57th minute, the Cobbers found the back of the net on a rebound after a great Hallberg save, taking a 1-0 lead. 

The Cobbers scored once again six minutes later, extending its lead to 2-0. 

The Saints had to make something out of nothing quick, and they sure did, in the 78th minute, Keegan Chastey (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) recorded a goal in his third straight game, on an assist by his brother, Parker Chastey (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld HS) and Aiden Olson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS). CSS now trailed 2-1 and had a real attempt to garner a comeback. 

Unfortunately for the Saints, the Cobbers defense was able to prevent another goal as Concordia-Moorhead picked up the victory in today's match.

On the Road
The Saints (1-4-0, 0-1 MIAC) will be back in action next on Saturday, where they will travel to Arden Hills, taking on Bethel. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
