(csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team split a pair of baseball games today, hosting the Auggies from Augsburg at Wade Stadium. The Auggies got the best of the Saints in game one, but CSS responded with a big offensive performance, and a complete game pitching performance, to defeat Augsburg in game two by a score of 7-4.
Game One: AUG 5, CSS 4
Both teams struggled early to get any offense going, as the Saints were held to without a hit through the first three innings.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Auggies offense, who at that point had been held to just one hit, was able to score three runs in the inning, taking a 3-0 lead.
The Saints cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning, as
Alex Haapajoki (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS (Central Lakes)), led off the inning with a double. With one out,
Kam Larson (Chaska, Minn./Chaska HS) doubled down the left field line, scoring Haapajoki, and making the score 3-1. After a Saints walk,
Mitchell Novak (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) hit a 2-RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.
The Auggies responded in the top of the next inning with an RBI double and single, to take a 5-3 lead over the Saints.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Saints' last attempt to tie the game,
Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) was able to drive in Novak, who had doubled earlier in the inning. However, the Saints fell just short as Augsburg defeated CSS in game one by a score of 5-4.
Game Two: CSS 7, AUG 4
After the Auggies were retired in order to start the game, CSS responded with three consecutive base hits, highlighted by RBI doubles by
Levi Stubbles (San Bruno, Calif./El Camino HS (Skyline College)) and Schelonka, as CSS took an early 2-0 lead.
The Auggies got a run back in the top of the second inning to cut the Saints' lead to 2-1.
After
Jack Tiemann (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) doubled to lead off the bottom of the second,
Kyle Oswald (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) collected an RBI on a single that scored Tiemann.
In the top of the third, the Auggies scored a run on a sacrifice fly, but Augsburg still trailed the Saints, trailing 3-2.
Oswald and
Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS) got on base to open the inning, followed by a single by Novak, the Saints had the bases loaded. The Saints were able to score a run on an Auggies error, followed by a walk by Schelonka to give CSS a 5-3 lead.
The Auggies scored two runs in the top of the fifth on a two-out triple to cut into St. Scholastica's lead.
After
Ryan Garlick (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS (Iowa Central Community College)) doubled with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Oswald picked up another RBI on a single, extending the lead to 6-4.
The Saints picked up another run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a Schemenauer RBI single as CSS now led 7-4.
The Saints were led pitching wise by
Payton Jeffries (Vancouver, Wash./Union HS (Shasta College)), who was dominant in today's game, especially after the fifth inning. The Auggies only recorded one hit after the fifth and just one walk, as his outstanding performance led the Saints to a 7-4 victory.
