Rhinelander, Wis. (csssaints.com) – St. Scholastica ends day two of the UTC Invite splitting 1-1. They started the day with a 1-0 win over the University of Wisconsin-Stout in 10 innings but then followed with a 4-1 loss against #16 ranked Concordia University Wisconsin.
CSS 1, UW-Stout 0
The Saints faced UW-Stout for the second time this season and it was a close match the whole way through all the way up until the very end. CSS was the home team and started in the field. Within the usual seven inning game, there were only five hits between both teams and the score remained 0-0. The game went on to 10 innings which also meant for the eighth, ninth and tenth inning it went into international rules where a runner automatically starts on second base. In the bottom of the 10th inning, Lizzie Gladitsch (North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS (Bethel)) goes to second base as the pinch runner and Aislind Dail (Sumner, Wash./Sumner HS) is up first to bat. Gladitsch reached third on a wild pitch and shortly after, Dail hit the game winning RBI single to bring home the 1-0 win for the Saints.
At the plate for CSS Maddison Blade (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) and Dail had the only two hits for the Saints. In the circle Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) pitched her second shutout of the season and had 11 strikeouts.
CSS 1, Concordia Wisconsin 4
CSS had a rough start in their game against Concordia as they went three up and three down in the top of the first inning and allowed two runs in the bottom of the inning. The second inning however, the Saints didn't allow any runs but also remained scoreless themselves. In the third, Concordia was able to scratch in their third run. Again, St. Scholastica held Concordia to just a 3-0 lead through the fourth inning until Concordia drove in their fourth and final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. In the top of the sixth inning Kari Breuer (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) singled to right field and later scored off a single by Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS). Concordia went three up and three down in the bottom of the sixth but unfortunately so did the Saints in the top of the seventh leaving the final score to be 4-1 Concordia.
At the plate for CSS Laviano led the Saint by going 2-3. The two other hits in the game were by Aryn Blumenthal (Linwood, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and Breuer. In the circle Ashley Matjka had two strikeouts. Behind the plate Laviano ended both the second and third inning after throwing out two runners stealing.
