WINONA, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey played their final game away with Saint Mary's University on Saturday afternoon. The night before, CSS would take game one with an impressive 2-0 shutout, today the Cardinals would answer back after a quiet Friday with five goals to the Saints one.
How it Happened
Saints scored first on Friday, this time the Cardinals would score six minutes into the contest. A few minutes later CSS would go on the power-play, in the span of two minutes, the Saints would get nine shots, but nothing would hit. As the period came to a close, CSS would have a total of 15 shots on goal, compared to SMU's six, but it would be Saint Mary's who had the 1-0 lead.
The second would start in the Saint's favor as an interference call would give them the opportunity to tie things up. Two minutes in, Lisa LaRoche (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) would get the power-play goal. That was LaRoche's third goal and CSS's 11th power-play goal this year. Teammates Taylor Murray (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) and Mariah Haedrich (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) had their part in the goal too.
Just over halfway through the second, CSS would again not be able to capitalize on their power-play, just as the penalty ended, SMU would take the 2-1 lead with six minutes left in the second. Murray and Jessie Ketola (Silver Bay, Minn./William Kelly HS) would have chances near the end, but both would be saved and they would head into the locker room down by a score.
In the third, CSS would have costly penalties that would lead to Saint Mary's scoring on the power-play, the first score was early in the first and the second one clocked in at 10:21. At this point in the action, the Saints would be down 4-1. Saints would once again hop on the power-play, and have four shots either blocked or saved. Minutes later, SMU would add another score to their totals.
With things coming to an end, the Saints would bring an extra attacker on the ice, looking for any chance for a quick score, but ultimately the Cardinals grab this game 5-1 and would split the series with the Saints.
