- Pohlkamp Goal, First power play goal of the season
Duluth Minn. – The Saint Scholastica Women's Hockey Team faced up against the Blugolds of the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. Tonight's game would end disappointingly with the Blugolds taking the victory, 4-1.
What Happened
Tonight's matchup between the Bluegolds and Saints started pretty even, with the puck going back and forth across the ice. Unfortunately the Blugolds would get an amazing opportunity as two Saints skaters would be booked on two related penalties, giving the Blugolds a five on three advantage, at 14:09. This would be enough for their very strong offense to score. The Blugolds would score at 14:53. With not much time remaining in the period the Blugolds would once again score, their second goal coming in at 16:43. That would end the period with the Blugolds up 2-0.Â
The second period would be much less exciting compared to the first. The Saints would get two shots on goal, as they did in the first, compared to the Blugolds who would put up 12 shots on net. With that many shots put up against the Saints defense, one is bound to go in, and one did. The Blugolds would score once more in the second period, extending their lead to three goals, with a score of 3-0. The period would come to an end with a score of 3-0 in favor of the Blugolds.
The third and final period would see the Saints giving it their all in an attempt to close the three-goal gap created by the Blugolds strong offense. In the Saints attempt to stop the Blugolds offense, they unfortunately let one goal slip through extending their already strong lead to four. The Blugolds would be held to less shots than any of the other periods, only getting 10 shots on net off. The Saints in comparison would kick up their offense and get five shots on net this period. Fortunately, late in the third period, with 55 seconds remaining, Abby Pohlkamp (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd HS) shoots the puck and sends it to the back of the net, putting the Saints on the board late in the game. This goal would be assisted by Sophie Parendo (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS), and Lisa LaRoche (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS). The game would come to an end after that goal with a final score of 4-1.
Goaltending
Makenzie Cole (Cohasset, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) would play all three periods for the Saints. She would face 39 shots, and register 35 saves.
Josie Mathison would play all three periods for the Blugolds. She would face nine shots, and register eight saves.
