Women's Basketball Falls in Hard Fought Battle Against Saint Mary's

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team hosted the Cardinals from Saint Mary's this evening in a conference matchup. The Saints found itself trailing by just six points at halftime, but the Cardinals opened up the game in the second half, getting outscored 42-29, and fell in today's game by a score of 74-55.
 
First Half
After the Cardinals opened up the game with a 7-0 run, Lexi Imdieke (Andover, MN/Andover High School) got a three-pointer to fall and moments later, Megan Hurley (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) and Jackie Johnson (Bemidji, MN/Bemidji High School) both scored, which gave CSS an 8-7 lead.
 
Imdieke wasn't quite done making her impact be felt in the first quarter, as she converted two more three-pointers, to extend CSS' lead 14-7.
 
The Cardinals only trailed by a single point at the end of the first quarter, and took back the lead on the first possession of the second quarter, leading 16-14.
 
Liz Frase (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS (Concordia-Moorhead)) was able to tie the game at 16-16 with a layup, but the Cardinals quickly reclaimed the lead.
 
Miranda Broberg (Milaca, Minn./Milaca HS (UW-Superior)) got herself going with a pair of free throws, followed by a layup of her own, to trim the Saints' deficit to just one point, trailing 21-20.
 
Later in the quarter, Katie Vaske (Woodbury, MN/Woodbury High School (Hamline University)) tied the game at 26-26, however, Saint Mary's went on a 6-0 to end the half, taking a 32-26 lead into halftime.
 
Second Half
Early on in the second half, Johnson hit her second three-pointer of the game, as St. Scholastica still trailed by a score of 34-29.
 
The Cardinals then went on a 11-2 run, with the only basket scored for CSS was a jumper by Broberg, as they now claimed a double-digit lead, by a score of 45-31.
 
The Saints scored its last field goal of the third quarter on a three-pointer by Vaske, as CSS trailed 52-39 heading into the final quarter.
 
Opening up the fourth quarter, Broberg got a three-pointer to go, making the deficit 10-points, as Saint Mary's lead 52-42.
 
The Cardinals went on a 7-0 run, until Frase silenced the run with a three-pointer of her own, but CSS still faced a big deficit, trailing 59-45.
 
The Saints offense went on a scoring drought for the next five minutes, Nia Hacker (Farmington, MN/Eastview High School) ended the drought with a jumper, and moments later Ashley Faur (Pine City, Minn./Pine City HS) hit her first three-pointer of the evening.
 
Trailing by 20, Vaske got a layup as well as a three-pointer to fall, but CSS fell in today's matchup by a score of 74-55.

The Saints (0-12, 0-10 MIAC) will be back in action next on Monday, where they will travel to Northfield to take on the Oles from St. Olaf in a road conference matchup. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
