Women’s Basketball Falls on the Road to St. Olaf

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team traveled to Northfield this evening, to take on the Oles from St. Olaf, in a conference matchup. Unfortunately, the Saints had a hard time finding the bottom of the net, as the Oles pulled away, defeating CSS by a score of 61-40.
 
First Half
The Saints got its first field goal to fall four minutes into the game, as Miranda Broberg (Milaca, Minn./Milaca HS (UW-Superior)) hit a jumper, but CSS trailed early.
 
Katie Vaske (Woodbury, MN/Woodbury High School (Hamline University)) got herself going in the closing minutes of the first quarter, hitting a jumper, but the Oles led by a score of 14-6.
 
Broberg scored the last five points for the Saints in the closing stages of the first quarter, trailing 14-11 heading into the second quarter.
 
St. Olaf extended its lead to eight points before Vaske hit a three-pointer, which was followed up with a layup from Broberg moments later, to trim the deficit to five.
 
After the lead extended to 11 points, Eve Turner (Side Lake, Minn./Hibbing HS) got her first points of the evening, with a layup, to make it 30-20.
 
The Oles went into the locker room at halftime leading 32-20 over CSS.
 
Second Half
The Saints' offense struggled in the early minutes, as they did not find the bottom of the net until five minutes into the third quarter. Vaske ended the scoring drought with a pair of jumpers on back-to-back possessions.
 
Turner got another basket to fall with a jumper just moments after Vaske's, as CSS trailed 43-29.
 
St. Olaf broke the game open in the fourth quarter, leading by as much as 24, but with three minutes to play, Nia Hacker (Farmington, MN/Eastview High School) got a three-pointer to fall, which was followed by Ashley Faur (Pine City, Minn./Pine City HS) hitting a three of her own, but CSS trailed 56-35.
 
Broberg hit a three-pointer in the final seconds of the game, as the Oles defeated the Saints this evening, by a score of 61-40.
 
Up Next
The Saints (0-13, 0-11 MIAC) will hit the court once again later this week on Wednesday, where they host the Royals from Bethel at Reif Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
