DULUTH, Minn.
(csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team hosted the Lumberjacks from Northland College this afternoon at Saints Field. The Saints jumped out to an early lead and held off a late push from the Lumberjacks to post its first victory of the young season, by a score of 2-1.
How it Happened
In the 81
st match between the two programs this afternoon, the Saints were able to gain momentum early, drawing six fouls in the first 28 minutes of action.
In the 30
th minute, the Saints found the back of the net for the first time of the season, coming from a beautiful goal by
Keegan Chastey (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) and assisted by
Finigan Huffington (Georgetown, Cayman Islands/John Gray HS).
The Saints took its lead into halftime and found themselves in control early in the second half, keeping itself on the Lumberjack's half of the field.
The Saints added to its lead in the 66
th minute, this time from the leg of
Andres Gradilla (Guadalajara, Mexico/Colegio Cervantes Costa Rica (Oakland City)) and off an assist by
Clemente Infante (Santiago, Chile/Saint Georges College (Oakland City)).
The game was a back-and-forth contest, with both teams drawing fouls. It came to a head in the 71
st minute when CSS was handed a red card, leaving itself vulnerable on the defensive side of the ball.
The Saints were able to keep Northland in check until in the 89 minute of the game, the Lumberjacks scored, cutting the Saints' lead to just one goal. However, the Saints were able to play a nice game of keep away from the Lumberjacks and prevailed to earn its first victory of the season, by a score of 2-1.
