MINNEAPOLIS (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team finally got a chance to face Augsburg University on Friday after being postponed the last two weeks. The Saints were able to win the first game of the doubleheader, with help from a dominant performance from
Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) on the mound and a multi-RBI game from
Matt Tautges (Fort Ripley, Minn./Pierz HS) and
Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS). In game two of the afternoon however, the Saints couldn't find the same success, falling 12-2, splitting today's doubleheader.
Game 1: CSS 5, Augsburg 2
The Auggies (12-19, 4-10 MIAC) found the scoreboard first in game one, adding a run on one hit, creating a 1-0 lead over CSS early.
In the top of the third inning, the Saints tied up the game. After three Saints batters reached base,
Zach Harding (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing HS) scored on a sacrifice fly by
Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS) to tie up the game at 1-1.
In the top of the fourth, Schelonka singled to right field to lead off the inning. He then scored when
Jack Harris (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep (Skyline CC)) hit an RBI single through the right side, giving the Saints a 2-1 lead. Harding then walked in the next at-bat and both Harris and Harding advanced on a balk. With two outs in the inning with the bases loaded, Tautges hit an RBI double through the left side, scoring Harding and
Kam Larson (Chaska, Minn./Chaska HS), who reached base via a hit by pitch, to extend CSS' lead over the Auggies, 4-1.
Schelonka had a dominant fourth inning, striking out two Auggies batters to keep the Saints in the driver's seat.
The game stayed the same through the next two innings. Schelonka, who struck out a career-high 10 Augsburg batters in game one, was on cruise control, striking out four batters from the fourth to sixth innings.
In the top of the seventh, Schemenauer hit his first career home run, this one a solo shot, adding to CSS' lead, 5-1.
Augsburg added one more run in its half of the seventh inning, but CSS took game one of the doubleheader by a score of 5-2.
Game 2: Augsburg 12, CSS 2 (F/7)
The Auggies jumped out on the Saints in the first inning, scoring four runs and giving them an early lead.
In the top of the second inning,
Cody Venske (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) singled, advancing Harris, who reached base on an error earlier in the inning, putting two men on with one out. Both Venske and Harris scored on an RBI single by
Mitchell Novak (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS), cutting into the Auggies lead, 4-2.
In the bottom of the third inning, Augsburg added four more runs to its lead on four hits, extending its lead over the Saints, 8-2.
The Saints struggled to register any base hits, recording just five hits all game. Augsburg added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on two hits, making the game 11-2 in favor of Augsburg.
Augsburg added its 12th and final run of the ballgame in the sixth inning, and as the Saints could not mutter any more runs in the top of the seventh, Augsburg took game two of the doubleheader by a score of 12-2.
