NORTHFIELD, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica baseball team split a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) doubleheader Saturday against the Knights from Carleton College. The Saints were led in game two by junior pitcher T.J. Martin (Minneapolis, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels). Martin struck out a season-high eight Knights batters while allowing just three hits to propel the Saints to a 5-1 victory.

Game 1: Carleton 4, CSS 3
In game one of the afternoon, the Saints pounced on the Knights (6-13, 3-4 MIAC) early. In the first inning, Matt Tautges (Fort Ripley, Minn./Pierz HS) led off the inning with a walk. Luke Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls HS) then singled to left, advancing Tautges to third to put two on with no outs. Schemenauer then stole second in the next at-bat and both runners scored on a sacrifice fly by Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS). Schemenauer scored on a throwing error, giving the Saints a 2-0 lead early.

The Knights responded with a run of their own on an RBI single that cut into the Saints' lead, 2-1.

In the bottom of the third inning, Carleton added more runs to take the lead, tallying five hits and three runs in the inning to take the lead over CSS, 4-2.

The Saints had a hard time stringing hits together, leading to three runners being left on base by the time the sixth inning came along. In the top of the sixth inning, Mitchell Olson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) walked to lead off the inning then advanced to second when Jake Schelonka (Sartell, Minn./Sartell HS) singled to put two on early in the inning. The Saints loaded the bases when Jack Tiemann (Bloomington, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) was hit by a pitch, but the Saints were only able to muster one run in the inning, courtesy of Jack Harris (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep (Skyline CC)), making the game 4-3 in favor of the Knights.

Unfortunately, the Saints were unable to piece anything together in the next inning, leading to the Knights taking game one by a score of 4-3.

Game 2: CSS 5, Carleton 1
The Saints repeated the first inning of game one, scoring an early run to take the lead. Tautges led off the game with a double and then scored later in the inning, giving the Saints an early 1-0 lead.

Junior pitcher T.J. Martin (Minneapolis, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) was given the nod to start game two of the afternoon, and he showed the kind of outing he was due to put together early, striking out two Knights batters in the first two innings.

Carleton added its first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single, making the game tied, 1-1.

Tautges singled in the top of the fifth inning and later scored on an RBI double by Schemenauer, giving the Saints the lead once again, 2-1.

Martin continued in his dominance, striking out three more Carleton batters over the next two innings, adding his total to eight for the afternoon.

In the top of the ninth inning, CSS broke the game open. It began with a double by Harris and advanced to third on a single by Zach Harding (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing HS). Kam Larson (Chaska, Minn./Chaska HS) singled to the pitcher on a bunt that scored Harris. Another Saints run scored on a suicide squeeze by Tautges that made it 4-1 in favor of CSS. The Saints added its final run of the inning on a Schemenauer RBI single to make the game 5-1.

Chase Bredl (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial HS) was tasked with shutting down Carleton for the ninth inning, and he delivered, striking out one while retiring two more batters to give the Saints a 5-1 victory.

Up Next
The Saints (9-13, 4-6 MIAC) were scheduled to be back in action tomorrow (Sunday) for a make-up doubleheader at Augsburg University. However, Augsburg's doubleheader against Hamline University today was suspended due to weather, so that game will be made up tomorrow, which bumps the Saints games. A make-up to the make-up will be announced at a later time.
