CLERMONT, Fla. (csssaints.com) – It was day three for the St. Scholastica softball team at The Spring Games on Tuesday and the Saints came away with a 5-3 extra-inning victory over Knox College (Ill.) to begin day, but weather would cancel the nightcap against Carthage College (Wis.).

CSS 5, Knox 3 (F/8)
The Saints got on the score with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Olivia Howe (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake HS) doubled in Kari Breuer (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) and then later scored on a Grace Hadlich (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) single.

A Madison Blade RBI double scored Emma Sather (Chetek, Wis./Chetek-Weyerhaeuser HS) in the third inning to extend the St. Scholastica lead to 3-0 in the top of the second. The Prairie Fire (1-4) got one across in the bottom frame and then added two more runs in the bottom of third to tie the contest at 3-3.

Neither team threatened the rest of the way as the contest went to extra innings. At The Spring Games, the international tiebreaker rule is put into play in extra-inning games where a runner is placed at second at the beginning of each half-inning.

The Saints quickly scored on a Lauren Laviano (Maplewood, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) RBI double to lead off the eighth inning. Laviano later scored on a Haley Rosenthal (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) RBI single to make it 5-3. Rosenthal then sat Knox down in order in the bottom of the eighth as the Saints prevailed 5-3.

Rosenthal pitched 5.1 innings of relief, allowing no hits and striking out six to earn the win. Laviano had a pair of hits to lead the Saints offense.

Carthage Game Canceled
The Saints then were scheduled to face Carthage, but after a lightning delay teams were asked to seek shelter due to a Tornado Warning. The Carthage was canceled for Tuesday night.

Up Next
The Saints (6-3) have Wednesday off and return to action on Thursday with games against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at 9:45 a.m. (ET) and Salem State University (Mass.) at 12 p.m. (ET). Both games will be in Leesburg, Florida.
