Turnovers Plague Women’s Basketball in Loss to Royals

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team was outscored 32-6 in the fourth quarter as Bethel University forced the Saints to commit a season-high 35 turnovers in a 79-38 loss Wednesday night at the Reif Gymnasium.  
 
How It Happened
A Miranda Broberg (Milaca, Minn./Milaca HS (UW-Superior)) layup gave the Saints an early 4-3 lead. Later in the first quarter, back-to-back 3-pointers by Broberg tied the game at 10-10. The Royals (15-7, 14-5 MIAC) scored the final four points of the quarter to lead 14-10 after 10 minutes of play. Broberg had eight of the team's 10 points in the quarter.
 
Bethel extended it to a 9-0 run following the first five points of the second quarter. Both teams combined to make just three field goals the final seven minutes of the first half as the Saints trailed 28-18 at halftime.
 
Liz Frase (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS (Concordia-Moorhead)) had the first three points for the Saints in the second half to keep it a nine-point game. However, Bethel responded with a 14-0 run with CSS committing eight turnovers over that span. St. Scholastica finished the third quarter strong scoring 11 of the final 14 points to trail 47-32 with one quarter to play.
 
The fourth quarter got away from the Saints as the Royals opened the period with a 23-0 run forcing nine CSS turnovers during that span. The Saints finished with 11 turnovers in the quarter as Bethel outscored the Saints 20-0 in points off turnovers in the fourth quarter alone to win by a final of 79-38.
 
Top Performers
Broberg had a game-high 21 points for the Saints.
 
Hayden Glander and Courtney Nuest each had 13 points to lead to lead the Royals. Bella Williams had nine points, nine assists and six steals.
 
Up Next
The Saints (2-19, 2-17 MIAC) hit the road Saturday to face Gustavus Adolphus College. Action is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
