DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team led for over 30 minutes and outscored Macalester College in both halves to win its second Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) game of the season 68-57 Monday night at the Reif Gymnasium.
How It Happened
The Scots (8-13, 6-12 MIAC) were the team in front for much of the first quarter, leading 16-9 with four minutes remaining. The Saints went on a 9-0 run, with
Emma Schmidt (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria HS) scoring five of those points, as the Saints took their first lead at 18-16. CSS ended the first quarter up 20-19.
With the score tied at 23-23 in the second quarter, back-to-back 3-pointers by
Amelia Zmuda (Saint Anthony, Minn./Saint Anthony Village HS) and
Liz Frase (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS (Concordia-Moorhead)) gave St. Scholastica a 29-23 lead. Later in the quarter, the Saints went on a 6-0 run to take a nine-point lead. That would be the margin at the half with the Saints up 40-31. The 40 points were the most in any half of a conference game this season.
Miranda Broberg (Milaca, Minn./Milaca HS (UW-Superior)) and Frase each had 12 points in the first half for the Saints, who shot 44% from the floor.
Macalester opened the second half on a 7-0 run to cut the Saints lead to two. CSS answered with a layup from
Megan Hurley (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) and a Broberg 3-pointer to go back up seven. With the margin at four points, a Hurley three-point-play made it 52-45 with less than 30 seconds left in the third. A pair of Broberg free throws in the final seconds of the period made it 54-46 St. Scholastica heading into the fourth quarter.
The Scots made a push at the midway point of the fourth quarter to make the score 60-56 CSS. However, the Saints held Macalester without a field goal the final four minutes as they finished the game on a 7-1 run to win going away by a final of 68-57.
