Women’s Hockey Scores Final Two Goals to Defeat Royals 2-1

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team got a short-handed goal with less than a minute to play in the second period to tie the game and then scored the game-winner less than two minutes into the third period Friday night to defeat Bethel University 2-1 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action at Mars Lakeview Arena.
 
How it Happened
The Saints outshot the Royals 13-4 in the first period, but had nothing to show for it as it remained scoreless into the second period.
 
Bethel struck first with an even-strength goal a little over four minutes into the second period to make it 1-0. The Royals earned a penalty late in the second period, but it was the Saints that capitalized as Rachel Anderson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) scored the short-handed goal to tie the game at 1-1. Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) had the assist.
 
St. Scholastica took its first lead of the night one minute and 44 seconds into the third period on an Abby Pohlkamp (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd HS) goal to make it 2-1. Lisa LaRoche (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) was credited with the assist. CSS killed off back-to-back penalties in the final eight minutes of the game to win by a final of 2-1.
 
Goaltending
Ashlea Arvidson (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS) had 17 saves to earn the win for the Saints. Mallory Tidona recorded 31 saves for the Royals.

The Saints (10-6-1, 7-2-1 MIAC) and Royals (6-8-0, 4-4-0 MIAC) will square off again in Blaine tomorrow (Saturday) with puck drop scheduled for 3 p.m.
