DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – In its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) postseason action, the St. Scholastica women's hockey team scored a pair of first period goals and then four of the final five goals after Augsburg University came back to tie it to win going away 6-3 on Saturday in quarterfinal action at Mars Lakeview Arena.
How it Happened
Mariah Haedrich (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) and
Allie Bussey (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) each scored goals in the first eight minutes of the game as the Saints jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
Rachel Anderson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) assisted the Haedrich goal and
Abby Pohlkamp (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd HS) the Bussey goal. CSS led 2-0 after one period, despite being outshot 14-8.
The Auggies (12-11-2) got on the board with a power-play goal five minutes into the second period. Augsburg later tied the game at 2-2 with a short-handed goal. However, that score was short-lived as
Taylor Murray (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) scored a power-play goal 16 seconds later to give the Saints the lead right back at 3-2. That would be the score after two periods.
St. Scholastica made it a two-goal game again just 11 seconds into the third period on an Anderson goal. However, the Auggies scored four minutes later to make it 4-3.
Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) found the net from a tough angle with less than seven minutes remaining to make it 5-3. Thompson then scored on the open net with less than three minutes remaining to make the final 6-3.
Goaltending
Lori Huseby (Babbitt, Minn./Northeast Range HS) made 40 saves to earn the win for the Saints. Chole Stockinger made 25 saves in relief for the Auggies.
