Women’s Basketball Struggles in Conference Opener

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball hosted its first conference game this season, against the Cobbers from Concordia-Moorhead. St. Scholastica was not able to get any momentum this afternoon, as the Cobbers led by as much as 38 today, and the Cobbers ultimately defeated CSS in today's game by a score of 77-48.
 
How it Happened
Katie Vaske (Woodbury, MN/Woodbury High School (Hamline University)) got the scoring started for CSS, as she added a pair of layups early in the game, giving CSS an early lead.
 
The Cobbers then went on a 14-0 run, until Megan Hurley (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) responded with a layup with just under two minutes left in the first quarter, as Concordia led CSS by a score of 18-6 after the first quarter.
 
Early in the second quarter, Eve Turner (Side Lake, Minn./Hibbing HS) got a layup to fall and Miranda Broberg (Milaca, Minn./Milaca HS (UW-Superior)) hit a three-pointer to trim the Cobbers lead, as CSS trailed 22-11.
 
The Cobbers then went on another big run, as Broberg hit another three with three minutes to play in the first half, but CSS still trailed 32-14.
 
Jackie Johnson (Bemidji, MN/Bemidji High School) scored a layup before the half, but CSS trailed the Cobbers by a score of 43-16 at halftime.
 
Lexi Imdieke (Andover, MN/Andover High School) hit an early three-pointer as the Saints struck first in the second half.
 
Halfway through the third quarter, Hurley added another score, followed by a layup by Grace Balut (Sandstone, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) as CSS trailed by 33.
 
Liz Frase (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS (Concordia-Moorhead)) hit a pair of layups late in the quarter to etch her name into the scorebook, but the Saints trailed by 37 heading into the fourth quarter.
 
In the opening moments of the final quarter, Vaske hit a pair of three-pointers to add to her point total in the game.
 
Following Imdieke's second three-point shot of the game, Vaske added another three and Turner added a jumper as CSS trailed in this one, 74-43.
 
Vaske got a layup to fall, giving her 13 points on the game, but the Cobbers defeated the Saints by a score of 77-48.

The Saints (0-3, 0-1 MIAC) will be back in action on Tuesday, where they will host the Pipers from Hamline at Reif Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
