WINONA, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team shot 26% from the floor in the second half as Saint Mary's University pulled away to defeat the Saints 77-59 on Saturday in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action.
 
How It Happened
An Isiah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) three-point play gave the Saints an early lead. However, the Cardinals (7-10, 5-8 MIAC) responded with a 10-0 run to take a nine-point lead. Later in the first half, back-to-back 3-pointers by Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) and Jack Silgen (Deerwood, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS (St. Thomas)) tied the game at 15-15. A Jeff Moore (Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS) layup gave CSS a 20-19 lead eight minutes to go in the first half. Saint Mary's countered with a 10-2 run to extend its lead back to seven. Silgen scored the final four points of the first half as the Saints trailed 37-33 at halftime. Both teams shot 48% from the floor in the first 20 minutes of action.
 
Quinn Fischer (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) made four free throws in the first two minutes of the second half as the Saints trailed 42-39. Later in the half, the Cardinals went on a 9-1 run to lead 54-43 with 13:35 remaining. A Fischer 3-pointer made it 59-53 with 10:37 remaining, but Saint Mary's responded with back-to-back 3-pointers. St. Scholastica was held to one field goal the final seven minutes as the Cardinals pulled away for the 77-59 victory.
 
Top Performers
Fischer led the Saints with 19 points, 12 of which coming in the second half. Silgen finished with 13 points, 11 of which coming in the first half. Carlson led the team with seven rebounds.
 
Noah Freschette led the Cardinals with a game-high 24 points.

The Saints (3-15, 1-12 MIAC) return to the Reif Gymnasium on Wednesday when they welcome Hamline University. Action is slated for 7 p.m.
