COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (
csssaints.com) - On Saturday afternoon, the St. Scholastica men's basketball team made the trip to Collegeville to take on the Johnnies of Saint John's University. CSS made a great effort in the first half, which saw the game tied at halftime. However, they struggled to duplicate its first half success and Saint John's ran away with the game, winning 83-62.
How it Happened
The Saints found themselves giving Saint John's, a team entering today's matchup second in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) standings, a run for their money.
Isiah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) scored his first seven points in the first six minutes of the contest and it gave CSS an early lead. Later in the first half, another Hendrickson three-pointer, assisted by
Quinn Fischer (Esko, Minn./Esko HS), tied up the matchup. Both teams battled neck and neck evenly, which was capped off by a three-pointer by Fischer to send CSS into the locker room at halftime tied at 36.
The second half saw the Saints' top two scorers, Hendrickson and
Jack Silgen (Deerwood, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS (St. Thomas)), score a pair of buckets to keep CSS in the game. Five minutes into the second half, Saint John's began a run which gave them a significant lead that they would not lose. The Johnnies run added up to a 18-3 spurt over the span of six minutes that gave them a comfortable 18-point lead. CSS made an effort to try to cut the lead and put themselves back in the game, which included buckets by
Jeff Moore (Richfield, Minn./Richfield HS), Fischer, and Silgen. However, the Johnnies' lead was too much to overcome and they defeated the Saints, 83-62.
