csssaints.com) – In its first action since New Year's Eve, the St. Scholastica men's hockey team's comeback fell short against Saint John's University on Thursday, falling 5-2 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play.
How it Happened
The Johnnies took an early lead, scoring three minutes and 19 seconds into the contest. Saint John's added a second goal with four minutes remaining in the period to lead 2-0 at the first intermission.
The margin extended to 3-0 less than four minutes into the second period. The Saints got on the scoreboard with three minutes left in the period on a
Sam Fuss (Edina, Minn./Edina HS (Minot-NAHL)) power-play goal to make it 3-1 at the second intermission.
Filimon Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya (New York Aviators-USPHL)) had the assist
St. Scholastica then cut the deficit to one with 14:21 remaining on an
Arkhip Ledenkov (Polotsk, Belarus/Ostroshitsko-Gorodokskaya (New York Aviators-USPHL)) goal. His brother, Filimon, and
Alec Severson (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS (Thief River Falls-SIJHL)) were credited with the assists. Less than four minutes later, CSS was called for a five-minute major, but the Saints penalty-kill allowed only three shots on goal, while also recording three shots on goal, during the major to keep the score at 3-2.
The Saints committed another penalty one minute after the major completed and killed that off as well, but were left with just 2:52 remaining and would pull the netminder with 2:12 left. The Johnnies added two empty-net goals in the final two minutes to win 5-2.
Goaltending
Jack Branby (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS (Winnipeg Blues-MJHL)) had 36 saves for the Saints, while Mac Berglove had 24 saves for the Johnnies.
