Must-Win to Get In for Men’s Hockey this Weekend

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team needs two wins and Finlandia University (Mich.) to not win this weekend if it wants its season to continue into the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NHCA) Harris Cup playoffs next week.

What You Need to Know about the Saints:
-CSS stayed alive with a 4-2 victory over Finlandia last Saturday on Senior Night.
-The Saints currently sit at fifth place in the North Division and sit three points behind Finlandia.
-The Saints need to win-out this weekend, while needing Finlandia to earn one point or less against conference leader St. Norbert College (Wis.).
-The last time, CSS failed to make the postseason was the 1996-97 season.
-In the win over Finlandia, the Saints scored four goals and Nick Trenciansky (Vancouver, British Columbia/Holy Cross Regional HS (Kindersley-SJHL)) stopped 20 shots.
-The Saints got goals from Cole Golka (Ardrossan, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Dryden Ice Dogs-SIJHL)) (13), Nolan Ross (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances HS (Fort Frances-SIJHL)) (2), Michael Talbot (Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS (Minot-NAHL)) (7), and Carson Rose (Surrey, British Columbia/Elgin Park Secondary (Weyburn-SJHL)) (11).
-Senior Cole Golka (Ardrossan, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Dryden Ice Dogs-SIJHL)) leads the team with 13 goals and 25 points.
-His points lead the NCHA and his goals are second. Dylan Nowakowski was the last Saint to lead the conference in points at the end of the season (2015-16).
-Sophomore Jordan Fralich (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School (Bismarck-NAHL)) leads the NCHA with 18 assists.
-Fralich's 18 assists also lead all NCHA players. Riley Riddell was the last Saint to lead the NCHA in assists (2010-11).
-The Saints are 8-1-0 when leading after two periods, but are 2-11-1 when tied or trailing after two.
-The Saints outshoot opponents in the first period only. They're outshot by 26 in the second period and one in the third.
-The Saints are 0-8 when they fail to score first and are winless when trailing at an intermission.
-The Saints are 0-2-1 in games that go into overtime and are 2-5 in one-goal games (including overtime).

What You Need to Know about Marian:
Record: 11-8-4, 9-5-2 NCHA
-Marian comes into the weekend second in the North Division with 20 points.
-The Sabres are battling Northland College for the second seed and home-ice for the quarterfinals of the Harris Cup playoffs.
-The Sabres are 4-4-1 on home ice this season.
-The Sabres were ranked all the way up at No. 13 this season. Though they have slowed down a little to start 2019, they are 4-4-1 since the turn of the calendar.
-Senior Nick Monfils leads the Sabres with seven goals, nine assists and 16 points.
-Junior Conner Blanck also leads the team with nine assists.
-Junior Hunter Vorva has logged over 1,200 minutes this season. He owns a 10-7-4 record with help from a .938 save percentage and a 1.79 GAA. Vorva has three shutouts this season.
-Vorva's save percentage ranks him eighth in the country and top in the NCHA
-The Sabers are 10-1-1 when scoring first, but are 1-7-3 when they don't.
 
Series Record: Marian leads 13-10 (Last Meeting: 2-1 Marian – 1/26/2019)
 
Series History: Since Marian and CSS became conference-mates during the 2013-14 season, the Sabres are 11-1 against the Saints. CSS has not won at Marian since November of 2011. The last three games have been decided by one goal.
 
What You Need to Know about Lawrence:
Record: 5-16-2, 3-11-2 NCHA
-Lawrence comes into the weekend last in both the North Division and the overall NCHA standings.
-The Vikings are the lone program officially eliminated from the postseason.
-The Vikings have one win in 2019 and that came against CSS in a triumphant 8-2 win.
-The Vikings are 3-8-2 at home this season.
-Junior Jake Drinkard leads the Vikings with nine goals.
-Senior Josh Koepplinger leads the team with 11 assists, he also leads the team with 19 points.
-Junior Evan Cline sees majority of net time for the Vikings, he has a 4-13-2 record with a 3.15 GAA and a .911 save percentage.
-Lawrence averages 1.78 goals per game, and allows 3.74.
-Lawrence is 4-2-1 when scoring first, but 1-14-1 when they allow the first goal.
-The Vikings are outshot by 273 this season, they get outshot by 223 in the first two periods combined.
 
Series Record: CSS leads 16-4-1 (Last Meeting: 8-2 LU – 1/25/2019)
 
Series History: The Vikings earned their first-ever win over the Saints in Duluth a couple of weeks ago. CSS lost 4-3 last year at Lawrence.
 
Looking Ahead: The Saints season comes down to this weekend, they will either be headed to St. Norbert College (Wis.) to fight in the playoffs or they'll be looking ahead to the 2019-2020 season.
