Women’s Hockey Hosts Concordia Wisconsin to Open Slaats Cup

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team will host Concordia University Wisconsin in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Slaats Cup Quarterfinals beginning Friday at Mars Lakeview Arena.

What You Need to Know about the Saints:
-After the sweep last weekend over Lake Forest College (Ill.), the Saints not only have their program best eight-game win streak, they also are ranked No. 10 by D3hockey.com this week.
-The Saints enter as the No. 2 seed for the NCHA Slaats Cup for the second time in program history.
-The 15 NCHA wins this year are a new program-best.
-Sophomore Rachel Anderson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) finished the regular season leading the NCHA in points (38) and assists (28) and is third on the team in goals (10).
-Anderson ends the regular season ranked sixth in NCAA Division III with 1.52 points-per-game, second with 1.12 assists-per-game, and eighth with four game-winning goals.
-Senior Alexia Klaas (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Minnesota-Duluth)) led the Saints with 14 goals on the season.
-The Saints swept the podium in the NCHA owning the top three spots for points. Anderson led with 38, sophomore Taylor Thompson (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) and Klaas finished second and third with 29 each.
-Freshman Amber Tilander (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) led all NCHA rookies with 18 points.
-Lexi Thomeczek (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy (St. Louis AAA Blues)) has cemented herself in the St. Scholastica record book. The junior broke the all-time career wins record last week against University of Wisconsin-Superior and added two more to her current record with two shutout victories over Lake Forest this past weekend to push the record to 31.
-With the shutout on Friday, she broke the single-season shutout record with five, and with the shutout Saturday she made it six.
-At the end of the regular season, she ranks third in the NCHA with save percentage (.948) and GAA (1.64) and ranks second with a .694 win percentage.
-The Saints ended the season with the leagues' top power-play, converting at a 23.5 percent rate. With an improved penalty kill at the end of the season the Saints finished with an 89.2 percent penalty kill, good for third in the NCHA.
-CSS has a plus rating in every period for scoring and gets higher as the game goes on. They outscore opponents by six in the first period, 13 in the second, and 19 in the third.
-The Saints are averaging 8.24 points-per-game, 4.48 more than their opponents.
-The Saints are 10-3-0 at Mars Lakeview Arena this season. The 10 home wins are another program-high.
-CSS is 15-1-0 when it scores first, but is 3-5-1 when they don't.
-The Saints are 9-0-0 when leading after the first, and 15-0-0 when leading after two periods of play.
 
What You Need to Know about Concordia Wisconsin:
Record: 12-10-2, 8-8-2 NCHA
-The Falcons finished the season by falling to the fifth-place spot in the NCHA standings after being swept by Trine University (Ind.) in the final weekend.
-Junior Natasha Wanless leads the Falcons with 16 goals, second-most in the NCHA.
-Senior Kristen Kennedy leads Concordia with 17 assists and 26 points. The 17 assists are fourth-most in the NCHA.
-Junior Emily Godwin ranks second among NCHA defenseman with 17 points.
-Freshman Maddy Millar ranks second among NCHA rookies with 16 points.
-Senior Christina Pattengale has played most of the minutes in net for the Falcons compiling an 11-9-3 record with a 2.38 GAA and a .915 save percentage.
-The Falcons have four players that rank in the top eight of the conference in power-play points.
-Wanless leads the league with eight power-play goals.
-CUW is averaging 2.68 goals per game (third in the NCHA), while surrendering 2.32 (fifth in the NCHA).
-Concordia is outshooting opponents by a combined nine shots this season.
-The Falcons are 8-2-2 when scoring first and 4-8-1 when allowing the first goal.
-Concordia is 7-5-1 on away ice this season.
 
Series Record: CSS leads 13-5-7 (Last Meeting: 3-1 CSS – 1/26/2019)
 
Series History: The teams spilt the regular season meeting in Mequon, Wisconsin back in January. The two teams have only met twice in the NCHA playoffs, both teams coming away on the winning side once. In 2015, Concordia beat CSS 2-1 in a single-game elimination in Duluth. CSS though, returned the favor last season knocking Concordia Wisconsin out of the playoffs in the quarterfinals, the teams tied on Friday and CSS won 2-0 on Saturday to send Concordia packing.
 
Looking Ahead: The winner of this quarterfinal series will be one of three teams to advance to the highest remaining seed next weekend. The lowest two seeds remaining will face each other in a semifinal next Friday with the winner of that contest advancing to face the highest remaining seed next Sunday for championship.
