UMAC Regular Season Title on the Line for Softball

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica softball team has its final two Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) doubleheaders this weekend against third-place Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday and first place Crown College on Sunday.

What You Need to Know about the Saints:
-The Saints are coming off back-to-back sweeps of Northland College and the University of Wisconsin-Superior.
-With four league games remaining, the Saints have already clinched a UMAC Tournament berth and sit a game behind Crown College for first place.
-CSS is only one game ahead of Bethany Lutheran College for second.
-The Saints have captured nine straight UMAC regular season titles.
-Sunday's doubleheader will be Senior Day for the Saints.
-They will recognize Alexa Bremer (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS), Vanessa Kohl (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS), Cindi Rydlund (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) and Heidi Shelton (Duluth, Minn./Proctor HS (St. Cloud Tech and CC)).
-Seniors Rydlund and Bremer are each carrying 13-game hitting streaks.
-Rydlund has reached base safely in each of the last 22 games.
-She leads the conference with a .452 batting average
-Bremer leads the team with 11 multiple-hit games.
-She is only eight hits shy of becoming the fourth Saint to record at least 200 hits in a career.
-She is tied for the conference lead with 16 stolen bases.
-CSS ranks 16th in NCAA Division III with 2.48 stolen bases per game.
-Junior Maggie Schley (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) leads the team with 10 multiple-RBI games with next closest Saint at five.
-Schley has 12 RBIs in the last six games.
-She leads the UMAC with 32 RBIs.
-CSS has out-scored teams 37-17 in the first inning.
-The Saints are 14-0 when they out-hit their opponents, but 0-9 when they get out-hit.
-They are 7-0 when they don't commit an error.
 
What You Need to Know about Bethany Lutheran:
-The Vikings enter Saturday's doubleheader as the hottest team in the league, winners of six straight.
-BLC is 14-14 overall and 9-3 in the UMAC.
-The three conference losses were being swept by the University of Northwestern (Minn.) and splitting with UW-Superior.
-Anna Pipenhagen still pitches for the Vikings and is tied for the UMAC lead with 11 wins, ranks second with 135 strikeouts and third with a 2.56 earned run average.
-Sarah Presler is second in the conference with a .441 batting average.
-Pipenhagen and Rachel Kurtenbach are tied for second in the league with three home runs.
-Statistically, CSS and BLC rank first and second, respectively, in terms of hitting for average and team earned run average.

Series History: The Saints have shut out the Vikings in each of the last four meetings, including in last year's UMAC Tournament where they won 21-0 … CSS has won 11 straight in the series.
 
What You Need to Know about Crown:
-The Storm suffered their first loss of the season with a split against UW-Superior on Thursday.
-Crown is playing Martin Luther College on Friday.
-The Storm still have to face Bethany Lutheran on Monday to close out the regular season.
-The reigning UMAC Player of the Year, Lis King leads the UMAC with seven home runs, a .747 slugging percentage and a .520 on-base percentage.
-King is fourth in the conference with a 2.85 earned run average.
-Cassidy Valenzuela leads the team with 38 hits and is tied for second in the UMAC with four triples.
 
Series Record: CSS leads 41-1 (Last Meeting: 3-0 CSS – 5/5/2017)
 
Series History: The Saints defeated the Storm in the UMAC Tournament semifinals last season … In last year's regular season finale, Crown defeated the Saints for the first time, 5-4 in St. Bonifacius.
 
Looking Ahead: The UMAC Tournament will begin on Thursday, May 3 at the site of the regular season champion.
