ST. PETER, Minn. (
csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica men's soccer team succumbed 4-2 to Gustavus Adolphus College Tuesday after all six goals were scored in quick succession in the second half.
The Action
The Saints and the Gusties were equally matched in the first half. Both teams shot seven times, unable to score. After a lightning delay and a scoreless half, the teams remained gridlocked moving into the second half.
The scoring quickly got started in the second half five minutes in. A Gustavus Adolphus player re-directed a corner kick, putting the Gusties on the board first. Eight minutes later and in the 58th minute of the game,
Luke Buckton (Bath, England/Writhlington School) tied up the game 1-1 off of an assist from
Jordan Finneran (Newmarket, England/Cambridge Regional College). CSS tried to keep the momentum up, but the Gusties quickly scored again.
Gustavus Adolphus scored twice, once in the 62nd and 66th minute before Finneran scored to weaken the Gusties' lead, bringing the score to 3-2.
Nolan Friday (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) passed to Finneran who shot the ball into the back of the right side of the net, bringing Finneran's point total in his last three games to 10.
The Gusties were able to score once more off of a free kick before the end of the game, strengthening their lead to the final score of 4-2.
Notable Performances
Finneran led the Saints with four shots on goal.
CSS goalkeeper
Corey Bulheller (Middleton, England/Highfields Secondary School (Bacone)) saved three of the seven shots he faced. The Gusties' goalkeeper Anders Severson stopped six out of eights shots.
