MINNEAPOLIS (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica women's team defeated the University of Northwestern (Minn.) 6-3 Saturday afternoon at the Baseline Tennis Center. This is the sixth time the Saints have played against the Eagles in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament championship. Northwestern had won the previous three seasons.

Doubles
The key to the match was doubles as the Saints trailed the Eagles after doubles play in each of the last three tournament championships. CSS would win two out of three doubles matches today. The No. 1 team of Jessica Solberg (Bemidji, Minn. /Bemidji HS) and Madeleine Scanlan (St. Albans, England /Loreto College) were able to edge out their opponents 8-6. The other tandem to win was the No. 3 team of Elise Hauer (Duluth, Minn. /Duluth East HS) and Alexia Brascugli (Eveleth, Minn. /Eveleth-Gilbert HS) by an 8-2 score.

Singles
The Saints needed to win only three of the six singles matches to secure the crown. CSS did one better, winning four out of six singles matches. Scanlan conquered 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot. Hauer, in the No. 3 spot, was pushed, but defeated her Northwestern opponent 7-5, 7-6 (7-4). No. 4 Sarah Coryell (Golden Valley, Minn. /Armstrong HS) skirted by in the first set 7-5, but ended up winning 6-3. The final winner was Elizabeth Fink (Rochester, Minn. /Rochester Century HS) at No. 6 by scores of 6-3, 6-4.

NCAA Tournament Fate
The Saints (18-5) now wait and see and if they will receive one of Pool B bids for the NCAA Division III Tournament. The field for the NCAA Division III Tournament will be posted on NCAA.com by 11 a.m. Monday.
