csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team dropped its first conference match of the season on Thursday to the University of Northwestern (Minn.), but responded by defeating North Central University (Minn.) 9-0.
Northwestern 5, CSS 4
The Saints suffered their first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) loss of the season, falling to Northwestern 5-4 Thursday evening at Johnson Courts.
Both teams were without their second-best players in
Madeleine Scanlan (St. Albans, England /Loreto College) for CSS and Tina Matetich for Northwestern. The Eagles had the upper hand after doubles action, taking two of the three matches. The lone winner was the No. 3 team of
Elise Hauer (Duluth, Minn. /Duluth East HS) and
Alexia Brascugli (Eveleth, Minn. /Eveleth-Gilbert HS) by an 8-6 score.
Northwestern (17-4, 4-1 UMAC) then won the first three singles matches to wrap up the dual. Despite the outcome already sealed, the Saints kept pushing and would win the final three matches to make the final 5-4.
Sarah Coryell (Golden Valley, Minn. /Armstrong HS) won at the No. 4 spot 6-0, 6-3.
Katelyn Rice (Eveleth, Minn. /Eveleth-Gilbert HS) prevailed 7-5, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot. The final winner was
Elizabeth Fink (Rochester, Minn. /Rochester Century HS) at the No. 6 spot by scores of 7-5, 6-2.
CSS 9, North Central 0
The Saints responded from the defeat to blank North Central in a match that also took place at Northwestern's Johnson Courts.
In doubles,
Jessica Solberg (Bemidji, Minn. /Bemidji HS) and
Miki Samz (Savage, Minn. /Burnsville HS) won 8-0. With that victory Solberg becomes the winningest player in program history to win at the No. 1 doubles spot.
Emma Bartels (Roseville, Minn. /Mounds View HS (Minn.-Duluth)) and
Syd Holt (Crosslake, Minn. /Pequot Lakes HS) won 8-3 at the No. 2 position and
Taylor Hays (Altoona, Wis. /Altoona HS) and
Kelly Neil (Mora, Minn. /Mora HS) cruised to an 8-1 win at the No. 3 spot.
Moving to singles action, Solberg (No. 1), Coryell (No. 2), Samz (No. 3) and
Serena Hutson (Meridian, Idaho /Bishop Kelly HS) at No. 6 all shut out their opponents 6-0, 6-0.
Jolene Duda (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) at the No. 4 spot won 6-2, 6-0 and the final winner was
Risako Oya (Chiba, Japan /ShowaGakuin Shuei HS) at No. 5 by scores of 6-1, 6-3.
