The Saints got off to a great start in doubles action. The No. 2 team of
Elizabeth Fink (Rochester, Minn. /Rochester Century HS) and
Katelyn Rice (Eveleth, Minn. /Eveleth-Gilbert HS) got things started by blanking their opponents 8-0. The No. 1 tandem of
Jessica Solberg (Bemidji, Minn. /Bemidji HS) and
Madeleine Scanlan (St. Albans, England /Loreto College) followed with an 8-3 victory.
The Norse would be able to pull out a tight match at the No. 3 spot, but the Saints led 2-1 going into singles play.
Singles
Scanlan gave St. Scholastica a 3-1 lead in the dual with a 6-1, 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot. For Scanlan, it was her 50
th career singles victory. She becomes the eighth player in program history to hit that milestone and only the third player in program history to record at least 50 singles wins and 50 doubles victories in a career. (
Motley/Gunderson)
After Luther prevailed at the No. 1 spot,
Daniela Rojas (Monterrey, Mexico /Universidad Tecmilenio) won in straight sets at the No. 3 spot 6-1, 6-3. With CSS now up 4-2 it just needed to win one of the remaining three matches.
The Norse (10-3) pulled out a victory at the No. 4 spot and things were getting really interesting, as Luther had also won the first sets at the No. 5 and 6 spots.
Sarah Coryell (Golden Valley, Minn. /Armstrong HS) at No. 5, however, rallied to take the second set and force a third-set super-breaker. With Luther looking like it was going to win at the No. 6 spot, it was up to Coryell for the Saints. In the 10-point super-breaker, Coryell came out on top, needing a little overtime by a final scores of 4-6, 6-0, (11-9) to give the Saints the 5-4 dual match win.
Up Next:
The Saints (6-1) will next be in action in hopefully sunny and warm Florida during spring break when it faces Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) and Lake Forest College (Ill.) on Sunday, March 12.
