DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team defeated Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) rival University of Northwestern (Minn.) 7-2 on Saturday at the Arrowhead Tennis Center.
Doubles
The Saints got off to a great start by sweeping the three doubles matches. The No. 1 team of
Jessica Solberg (Bemidji, Minn. /Bemidji HS) and
Madeleine Scanlan (St. Albans, England /Loreto College) cruised to an 8-1 victory. The No. 2 team of
Katelyn Rice (Eveleth, Minn. /Eveleth-Gilbert HS) and
Elizabeth Fink (Rochester, Minn. /Rochester Century HS) also had very little trouble, winning 8-3. The first match to finish was the closest as the No. 3 duo of
Elise Hauer (Duluth, Minn. /Duluth East HS) and
Alexia Brascugli (Eveleth, Minn. /Eveleth-Gilbert HS) won 8-5.
Singles
After the Eagles took the match at No. 1 singles, Scanlan beat her opponent in straight sets at the No. 2 spot 6-4, 6-1. The Saints needed only one more win to seal the dual and that victory was delivered by Hauer, who edged her opponent at the No. 3 spot in a third set super-breaker 6-4, 3-6, (10-6).
However, the Saints were not done winning as
Sarah Coryell (Golden Valley, Minn. /Armstrong HS) dropped only two games to come out on top at the No. 4 spot 6-2, 6-0. The final CSS winner was the final match of the afternoon with Rice prevailing in a marathon match 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, (14-12).

The Saints (11-3, 4-0 UMAC) will play their third match in three days tomorrow when they face the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse at the Lifetime Fitness in White Bear Lake.
