ORLANDO, Fla. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team began its Spring Break Trip with a pair of victories on Sunday.
CSS 7, Saint Ambrose 2
The Saints opened their trip at the brand new USTA Training Center in Lake Nona, Florida. The Saints faced NAIA's Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) and cruised to a 7-2 victory.
In doubles action, the No. 1 team of
Madeleine Scanlan (St. Albans, England /Loreto College) and
Jessica Solberg (Bemidji, Minn. /Bemidji HS) won 9-7. The No. 2 team of
Elise Hauer (Duluth, Minn. /Duluth East HS) and
Alexia Brascugli (Eveleth, Minn. /Eveleth-Gilbert HS) was also victorious by an 8-4 score.
The Saints proceeded to win five of the six singles matches.
Sarah Coryell (Golden Valley, Minn. /Armstrong HS) won at the No. 2 spot by scores of 6-1, 6-3. For Coryell, that was her 50
th career singles victory, the ninth player in program history to reach that milestone.
Coryell's winning scores were the same for
Emma Bartels (Roseville, Minn. /Mounds View HS (Minn.-Duluth)) at the No. 4 spot.
Miki Samz (Savage, Minn. /Burnsville HS) won at the No. 4 spot 7-5, 6-3. The final winner was
Risako Oya (Chiba, Japan /ShowaGakuin Shuei HS) at No. 5 by scores of 6-1, 6-4.
CSS 7, Lake Forest 2
St. Scholastica's second match of the day was against a short-handed Lake Forest College (Ill.) squad. The Foresters had only four players dress so that meant the Saints won by default at the No. 5 and 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. CSS did go 4-2 in the matches that were played to win 7-2.
The Saints split the two doubles matches that were played. The No.1 team of Solberg/Scanlan won 8-4.
In singles, Solberg shut out her opponent at the No. 1 spot 6-0, 6-0. Scanlan won at No. 2 by scores of 6-0, 6-4.
Katelyn Rice (Eveleth, Minn. /Eveleth-Gilbert HS) was the final winner on the day with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the No. 4 spot.

The Saints (8-1) are off on Monday and return to the court on Tuesday to face both Cornell College (Iowa) and Saint Mary's College (Ind.).
