csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team began its 2017 season on Friday night taking down its College Street foe University of Minnesota-Duluth 6-3 at the Arrowhead Tennis Center.
Doubles:
The No. 3 team
Katelyn Rice (Eveleth, Minn. /Eveleth-Gilbert HS) and
Elizabeth Fink (Rochester, Minn. /Rochester Century HS) got the season off right with an 8-3 victory. After UMD took the No. 2 doubles match, it came down to the No. 1 matchup.
The No. 1 team of
Jessica Solberg (Bemidji, Minn. /Bemidji HS) and
Madeleine Scanlan (St. Albans, England /Loreto College) appeared to be on their way to victory, but the Bulldogs fought off a pair of match points and won three straight games to tie it at 7-7. The match went to a tie-breaker and the CSS duo would pull it out for the 9-8 (7-4) victory.
Singles:
The Bulldogs won the No. 3 singles match to even up the dual at two matches apiece. St. Scholastica then took control as Rice cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 6 spot.
Sarah Coryell (Golden Valley, Minn. /Armstrong HS) continued her winning streak from last season at the No. 5 spot, winning 7-5, 6-4.
Daniela Rojas (Monterrey, Mexico /Universidad Tecmilenio) sealed the match for the Saints at the No. 4 spot, hanging on to win 7-6, 7-6 (10-8). Scanlan was the final winner on the night for the Saints, coming out on top at the No. 1 spot 7-5, 6-2.
