MINNEAPOLIS (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica women's tennis team was defeated by the University of Northwestern 6-3 on Saturday in a tightly-contested Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament championship match at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
Doubles Competition
In the two meetings during the regular season, the Saints swept in the Eagles in doubles in the first matchup in Duluth and then took two out of three last week in St. Paul. On Saturday, Northwestern would adjust its pairings and the move proved to be effective, as the Saints would drop all three matches by an identical score of 8-6. CSS had lost only one doubles match in conference play during the regular season.
Singles Competition
Three of the six singles matches would be decided by third-sey super-breakers.
The Saints dropped matches at the No. 1 and 4 spots in stright sets. Madeleine Scanlan (St. Albans, England /Loreto College) won her match at the No. 2 spot in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Elise Hauer (Duluth, Minn. /Duluth East HS), playing No. 3, came out on top in one of those super-breakers with a score of 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (10-5).
Sarah Coryell (Golden Valley, Minn. /Armstrong HS), in the No. 5 spot, was also victorious in super-breaker, winning her 25th singles match of the season 6-1, 1-6, 1-0 (10-3). Katelyn Rice (Eveleth, Minn. /Eveleth-Gilbert HS)Â battled hard in the No. 6 spot, but fell to her Eagles opponent 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 1-0 (10-7).
Does the Season Continue?
Despite the loss, the Saints (19-6) are still in contention for a Pool B bid for the NCAA Division III Tournament. Two Pool B bids are awarded to schools that either belong to a conference that doesn't have an automatic qualifer or to schools that don't belong to a conference. When compared to those schools, including Northwestern, the Saints size up very well. The announcement of the 2016 NCAA Division III Tournament field will be posted on NCAA.com by noon on Monday.Â
