Kevin Wagner (Cleveland, Minn./Cleveland HS) is in fourth place after the first five events of the Decathlon on Thursday at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships, hosted by Wartburg College.
Wagner opened with the 100m dash running into a headwind and finished fifth overall with a respectable time of 11.45. He followed with a personal-best leap in the long jump with a mark of 22'3.75" (6.80m) to finish third in that event.
In the third event of the day, Wagner finished fourth in the shot put with a toss of 41'0.5" (12.51m). In the high jump, Wagner cleared 5'11.25" (1.81m) to finish tied for 12
th that dropped him from third place to fourth spot.
In the final event of the day, Wagner was 11
th in the 400m dash with a time of 51.81.
That gives him 3,536 points thru five events, which puts him fourth, but he is only 20 points out of second. The NCAA Indoor Heptathlon champion, Ethen Schoen of the University of Wisconsin-Stout, leads the way with 3,717 points.
Friday
The decathlon concludes tomorrow with the 110m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1,500m run. Day two gets started at noon.
Nicole Christianson will also be competing in the high jump at 2:30 p.m.
