WHITEWATER, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team was defeated by the No. 21 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks in the first round of the NCAA Division III national tournament Thursday by a score of 5-1.
Doubles Competition
The head-to-head matchup started with the doubles competition. The Saints were swept 3-0 despite a terrific performance from their No. 1 team of Jessica Solberg (Bemidji, Minn. /Bemidji HS) and Madeleine Scanlan (St. Albans, England /Loreto College). The duo only lost by three games, falling by a score of 8-5.
The most impressive thing about the match between the No. 1 teams was the fact that Solberg and Scanlan almost beat the No. 1 doubles team in the central region in Megan Humphreys and Bridgid McGuire.
Singles Competition
CSS wasn't completely shutout, however, as freshman Katelyn Rice (Eveleth, Minn. /Eveleth-Gilbert HS) defeated UW-Whitewater's Rachel Siemon in straight sets by scores of 6-2, 6-2. Scanlan, who was at the No. 2 spot for the Saints, didn't go down easily as she lost by scores of 6-4, 6-3 to Whitewater's Alexandra Talyansky.
Sarah Coryell (Golden Valley, Minn. /Armstrong HS) was in the midst of notching her 26th singles win of the season, but wouldn't be able to finish the match (6-1, 5-2) as Whitewater reached their fifth win to seal the match.
What's Ahead
The Saints (19-7) are expected to return every player that participated this season. Katie Kingston (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) is the only senior on the squad, but did not play this season due to injury.
